Cynicism is a default position in an awful lot of entertainment,\u201d had some rather cynical words regarding the Da Vinci Codes films he made.<\/p>\n<p>Hanks spoke in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2022\/06\/13\/magazine\/tom-hanks-interview.html\">The New York Times<\/a> about the mystery-thriller films based on the work of author Dan Brown, which included \u201cThe Da Vinci Code,\u201d (2006), \u201cAngels and Demons,\u201d (2009) and \u201cInferno\u201d (2016).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, God, that was a commercial enterprise,\u201d Hanks admitted. \u201cYeah, those Robert Langdon sequels are hooey. \u2018The Da Vinci Code\u2019 was hooey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, Dan Brown, God bless him, says, Here is a sculpture in a place in Paris! No, it\u2019s way over there. See how a cross is formed on a map? Well, it\u2019s\u00a0<em>sort<\/em>\u00a0of a cross,\u201d Hanks \u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose are delightful scavenger hunts that are about as accurate to history as the James Bond movies are to espionage. But they\u2019re as cynical as a crossword puzzle. All we were doing is promising a diversion,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing wrong with good commerce, provided it is good commerce,\u201d Hanks insisted, quipping, \u201cBy the time we made the third one, we proved that it wasn\u2019t such good commerce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The original book and film of \u201cThe Da Vinci Code\u201d films elicited harsh criticism from the Catholic Church for the supposition that a cover-up had been implemented over a marriage between Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene and that they had borne a daughter; criticism was also leveled for the portrayal of the Catholic organizations Priory of Sion and Opus Dei. Some members of the Catholic Church urged a boycott of the film.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me tell you something else about \u2018The Da Vinci Code,\u2019\u201d Hanks confided. \u201cIt was my 40th-something birthday. We were shooting in the Louvre at night. I changed my pants in front of the Mona Lisa! They brought me a birthday cake in the Grand Salon! Who gets to have that experience? Any cynicism there? Hell no!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hanks, who had been a supporter of former President Barack Obama, seemingly slammed \u00a0the Trump administration as he declared, \u201cNow, a certain administration came down the pike, and the people who were screaming seemed to rule the day. Why? Because the people who cared about what\u2019s right didn\u2019t show up. Well, something egregious enough comes along, and guess what? People will show up.
