Josh Kail, Torren Ecker, and Tim O\u2019Neal, all Republicans, <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pahousegop.com\/News\/28905\/Latest-News\/House-Republicans-Start-Impeachment-Process-of-Philadelphia-District-Attorney-Larry-Krasner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cited<\/a><\/u> Krasner\u2019s alleged failure to curb \u201cunchecked violent crime\u201d and his \u201cwillful refusal\u201d to \u201cenforce existing laws\u201d as reasons for beginning the impeachment process. <\/p>\n<p>They also pointed to a <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/three-dead-and-11-injured-in-philadelphia-mass-shooting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent mass shooting<\/a><\/u> in the city\u2019s downtown South Street neighborhood as \u201cunderscor[ing]\u201d the need for lawmakers to \u201ctake immediate action.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p><b><u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/washington-secrets\/soros-to-fight-prosecutor-recalls-elect-more-liberal-das\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SOROS TO FIGHT PROSECUTOR RECALLS, ELECT MORE LIBERAL DAS<\/a><\/u><\/b> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately for the people of Philadelphia, and the people of Pennsylvania at large, the problem of violent crime in Philadelphia has reached a point that demands this action be taken,\u201d Ecker said in a statement released by the state&#8217;s House Republican Caucus. \u201cTaking this step today and undertaking this process continues what we have been doing and what we need to do to combat violence and crime here in Pennsylvania \u2014 ensure the laws already on the books are enforced.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did not arrive at this decision lightly or easily. In fact, we are taking this action after we have taken significant steps to pass legislation that addresses violent crime in Philadelphia by ensuring our current laws are enforced,\u201d Kail said. <\/p>\n<p>At a press conference following the announcement, O\u2019Neal said the lawmakers expect their articles of impeachment to draw support from some Democrats, noting that while the impeachment process is only just beginning, the group \u201cfully anticipates\u201d that impeaching Philadelphia\u2019s top prosecutor will be a \u201cbipartisan effort.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Krasner has long been a lightning rod for conservative attacks as a result of his progressive criminal justice reform priorities, such as seeking shorter prison sentences for crimes, relaxing terms of supervision for individuals on parole or probation, and strictly limiting the use of cash bail, which critics have <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/soros-backed-philly-das-policies-keep-on-killing-philadelphians\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lambasted<\/a><\/u> as soft on crime and a dereliction of prosecutorial responsibility. Under his tenure as district attorney, the City of Brotherly Love has experienced a <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/restoring-america\/fairness-justice\/phillys-crime-wave-could-affect-the-midterm-election-results-in-pennsylvania\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dramatic<\/a><\/u> <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/17\/us\/philadelphia-prosecutor-election-Larry-Krasner.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increase<\/a><\/u> in homicides and gun violence in comparison to past years. <\/p>\n<p><b><u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/u><\/b> <\/p>\n<p>Other state lawmakers had previously called for Krasner\u2019s ouster but until now had stopped short of beginning the impeachment process. In January, the top Republican in Pennsylvania\u2019s state Senate <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/top-pennsylvania-senator-seeks-impeachment-of-philadelphia-da-over-violent-crime-spike\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urged<\/a><\/u> state representatives to pursue Krasner\u2019s impeachment, a move the district attorney and his allies slammed as a political \u201cstunt.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>According to Pennsylvania\u2019s <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.state.pa.us\/cfdocs\/legis\/LI\/consCheck.cfm?txtType=HTM&#038;ttl=00&#038;div=0&#038;chpt=6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">constitution<\/a><\/u>, public officials can be impeached by a simple majority vote of the state House of Representatives for \u201cany misbehavior in office.\u201d The state Senate would then need to convict the impeached individual with a two-thirds supermajority vote following a trial.
