Mike DeWine confirmed Monday that he signed a bill allowing teachers and school staff to carry guns in school with reduced training.<\/p>\n<p>The bill, <a href=\"https:\/\/search-prod.lis.state.oh.us\/solarapi\/v1\/general_assembly_134\/bills\/hb99\/PS\/04\/hb99_04_PS?format=pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HB99<\/a>, reduces the number of hours of training the staff members have to get to carry a firearm within the school. Under the new law, teachers and other staff must possess at least 24 hours of training, compared to the previous over 700 hours of training, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbc4i.com\/news\/local-news\/columbus\/guns-for-teachers-gov-mike-dewine-gives-update-on-passed-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to local outlet NBC4.<\/p>\n<p>The 24 hours includes 18 hours of general training, two hours of handgun training, two hours of \u201cadditional\u201d general training and two hours of \u201cadditional\u201d handgun training, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BREAKING?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BREAKING<\/a>: Gov. In 2021, the state Supreme Court ruled that they had to undergo peace officer training, which amounted to over 700 hours, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/06\/13\/us\/ohio-teachers-guns-training.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to the New York Times.<\/p>\n<p>School board members will still need to approve staff members carrying guns within schools, even under the new law, according to the New York Times.<\/p>\n<p>Nine states currently allow school staff to carry guns, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>The governor previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbc4i.com\/news\/local-news\/columbus\/guns-for-teachers-ohio-senate-passes-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> he was looking forward to \u201csigning this important legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>HB99 was introduced in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.ohio.gov\/legislation\/legislation-status?id=GA134-HB-99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">February<\/a>, months before the deadly Uvalde, Texas, school shooting.
