And few have been more outspoken about this problem than the world\u2019s richest man.<\/p>\n<p>Elon Musk recently reacted to the news that China \u2014 which boasts a population of more than 1.4 billion \u2014 added a mere 480,000 people in 2021 by issuing a warning that the east Asian country is poised for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/elon-musk-predicts-chinese-population-collapse\">population collapse<\/a>. Indeed, Chinese fertility rates plummeted from 1.3 to 1.15 births per woman between 2020 and 2021 alone \u2014 indicating that the Chinese are having children far below replacement levels. With each generation, up to 40% of the population may disappear.<\/p>\n<p>The conventional wisdom for the past half century \u2014 and even beforehand \u2014 said that \u201ctoo many people\u201d would do nothing more than stifle natural resources. However, Elon Musk \u2014 a relentless optimist \u2014 is saying the opposite.<\/p>\n<p>Malthusian Mayhem<\/p>\n<p>The notion of centrally planned population control in China traces its roots to a British philosopher named Thomas Malthus, who theorized that the nation\u2019s birthrate would outstrip its ability to grow food \u2014 thereby inducing mass starvation. Though his ideas proved to be dead wrong in the subsequent decades, Malthusian thought, nonetheless, spread alongside the ideology of Karl Marx in communist China.<\/p>\n<p>As detailed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/27503212\">1991 paper<\/a> from Cornell University professor Joseph Mayone Stycos, the adoption of China\u2019s infamous One Child Policy came after decades of propaganda meant to warp the public perception of family planning, contraception, and abortion \u2014 necessary tools to achieve the communist leadership\u2019s vision for the masses.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese were initially wary of family planning, due to fears among medical providers that the practice would increase sexual licentiousness and thereby erode public morality. Yet, in the decades after World War II, propagandists have found ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/pro-abortion-protesters-allegedly-take-abortion-pills-outside-of-supreme-court\">cut through such outdated views<\/a>. \u201cGroup leaders would highlight new thinking and tell with pride of their own contraceptive efforts,\u201d Stycos explained. \u201cThese were standard techniques for political indoctrination and for innovating whatever economic reform was current.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By the 1980s, officials started to establish grassroots monitoring, financial and social initiatives, and other mechanisms to enforce adherence to government-issued \u201cone-child certificates.\u201d Echoing Malthusian language, one Chinese deputy prime minister said in 1979 that \u201ctoo rapid an increase in population is detrimental to the acceleration of capital accumulation\u2026hinders our efforts to quickly raise the scientific and cultural level of the nation\u2026and is detrimental to the improvement of the people\u2019s standard of living.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even in the modern West, there are remnants of Malthusian thinking that are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/williams-overpopulation-hoax-walter-e-williams\">still going strong<\/a>. In 1968, Stanford University professor Paul Ehrlich wrote a bestselling book called \u201cThe Population Bomb,\u201d which predicted that \u201chundreds of millions of people will starve to death\u201d in the 1970s and 1980s. His predictions \u2014 which turned out to be completely wrong \u2014 led to billions of dollars of spending to combat overpopulation through entities like the United Nations Population Fund. In some parts of the world, women were forcibly sterilized.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the spirit of Malthus also endures through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/analysts-climate-alarmism-leading-people-to-have-fewer-children\">climate alarmism<\/a>. A recent investor note from analysts at Morgan Stanley said that the \u201cmovement to not have children owing to fears over climate change is growing and impacting fertility rates quicker than any preceding trend in the field of fertility decline.\u201d Thousands of young people around the world have signed the \u201cNo Future Pledge\u201d \u2014 which encourages them to opt out of reproduction in the interest of cutting carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<p>With respect to China, many Western media outlets still report on the One Child Policy through rose-colored glasses. \u201cOverpopulation in a country is the result of the number of people in an area being much higher than the country\u2019s available resources,\u201d declared one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/chinas-over-crowded-population-2016-3\">Business Insider<\/a> article from 2016 complete with \u201cmesmerizing photographs\u201d depicting large crowds of Chinese citizens.<\/p>\n<p>To this day, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npc.gov.cn\/zgrdw\/englishnpc\/Constitution\/2007-11\/15\/content_1372964.htm\">Constitution of the People\u2019s Republic of China<\/a> has a clause stating that \u201cboth husband and wife have the duty to practice family planning.\u201d Yet, now that the Chinese government\u2019s goals have changed, leaders are having difficulties turning the ship from population suppression to population growth.<\/p>\n<p>Five-Year Sham<\/p>\n<p>China tossed its One Child Policy six years ago in favor of a Three Child Policy \u2014 and other public initiatives are now supporting the new benchmark. In the course of a few days, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced several reforms last summer meant to cut living expenses for families with multiple children.<\/p>\n<p>For one, the Chinese government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/china-cracks-down-on-real-estate-industry-so-that-families-can-afford-housing\">increased certain mortgage rates<\/a> in an attempt to make housing more affordable, seeking to discourage private investors from using residential real estate for speculative purposes.<\/p>\n<p>For another, the Chinese government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/china-cracks-down-on-120-billion-private-tutoring-industry\">unveiled<\/a> new regulations for the nation\u2019s $120 billion private tutoring industry.
