No, it\u2019s most certainly not over. I know that\u2019s not the message you want to hear, and it\u2019s definitely not the message I want to deliver,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ghebreyesus told officials gathered in Geneva for the opening of the WHO\u2019s annual meeting that declining testing and sequencing means \u201c\u2018we are blinding ourselves to the evolution of the virus.\u2019\u201d In addition, he said that while billions are vaccinated against the virus, nearly one billion people in lower-income countries still are not.<\/p>\n<p>While some 60% of the world\u2019s population is vaccinated, he said, \u201c\u2018it\u2019s not over anywhere until it\u2019s over everywhere.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ghebreyesus mentioned, \u201c\u2018reported cases are increasing in almost 70 countries in all regions,\u2019\u201d\u00a0the UN reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018 \u2026 \u00a0And this in a world in which testing rates have plummeted,\u2019\u201d the WHO head added.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the virus is spreading rapidly in Africa, where the vaccination rate is the lowest worldwide. And he said while there appears to be ample supply of the vaccine, there is \u201c\u2018insufficient political commitment to roll out vaccines\u2019\u201d in some countries, while there remain gaps in \u201c\u2018operational or financial capacity\u2019\u201d in other nations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018In all, we see vaccine hesitancy driven by misinformation and disinformation,\u2019\u201d Ghebreyesus said. \u201c\u2018The pandemic will not magically disappear. But we can end it. We have the knowledge. We have the tools.
