Version: 4.0.47--><p>A new analysis by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/heritage-foundation\">Heritage Foundation<\/a>\u00a0calls into question the widespread claim that giving puberty blockers and hormones to children who reject their biological sex prevents suicides \u2013 and grimly suggests the opposite may be true.<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/heritage-foundation\">report<\/a>\u00a0titled \u201cPuberty Blockers, Cross-Sex\u00a0Hormones, and Youth Suicide, the conservative think tank determined that causal conclusions being drawn between medical interventions and suicide among young people are not supported by data.\u00a0The Washington-based foundation is hoping states use its findings to pursue policies strengthening parental involvement in such pivotal decisions for their children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe claim that puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones prevent suicides is being used by the Biden administration and state policymakers to ease access to those drugs,\u201d Jay Green, Heritage Foundation senior research fellow, Center for Education Policy, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\">The Daily Wire<\/a>. \u201cAs it turns out, the science behind that claim is extremely weak and when the evidence is examined properly, it shows that making cross-sex treatments more widely available risks raising youth suicide rates rather than reducing them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The findings, which have not gone through peer-review, could be significant in light of President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/joe-biden\">Joe Biden<\/a>\u2018s administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/white-house-early-trans-surgeries-hormones-are-crucial-for-kids-teens-who-identify-as-trans\">recent assertion<\/a> that \u201cearly\u201d interventions are \u201ccrucial\u201d for the health of kids and teens who identify as\u00a0transgender and nonbinary. \u00a0In making those claims, Biden is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/news\/lgbtq-rights\/doctors-agree-gender-affirming-care-is-life-saving-care\">echoing<\/a> groups like the ACLU and LGBTQ organizations like the Trevor Project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s clear that gender-affirming care has the potential to reduce rates of depression and suicide attempts while banning this vital care and exposing young people to harmful political rhetoric can cause real harm,\u201d Amit Paley, CEO and executive director of The Trevor Project, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/nbc-out\/out-health-and-wellness\/hormone-therapy-linked-lower-suicide-risk-trans-youths-study-finds-rcna8617\">said in December<\/a>, noting that it is \u201ccritical that all transgender and nonbinary youth across the country have access to medical care that is affirming, patient-centered, and evidence-based.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">To help transgender youth and their parents thrive, the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WhiteHouse?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@WhiteHouse<\/a> highlighted several new resources including OPA\u2019s resource on gender-affirming care and why it is important. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QohcgIFzfP\">https:\/\/t.co\/QohcgIFzfP<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4tAz8yMndl\">https:\/\/t.co\/4tAz8yMndl<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TDov2022?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#TDov2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Office of Population Affairs (@HHSPopAffairs) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HHSPopAffairs\/status\/1509617985002037250?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 31, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Prior research conducted on the relationship between adolescent suicides and puberty blockers or cross-sex hormones is weak not only because it doesn\u2019t contain \u201ccredibly casual studies and only a handful of correlational studies,\u201d Green wrote, but also because the correlational studies previously conducted are \u201cpoorly executed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elevated suicide rates in states where minors can easily access puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones became \u201cobservable\u201d in 2010, Green wrote, noting that \u201crather than being protective against suicide, this pattern indicates that easier access by minors to cross-sex medical interventions without parental consent is associated with higher risk of suicide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report found that around 2016, suicide rates among young people aged 12 to 23 began to increase dramatically in states with provisions allowing minors to access healthcare without parental consent, compared to states that do not have such a provision. This was after cross-sex medical intervention became more common, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy 2020, there are about 3.5 more suicides per 100,000\u00a0people ages 12 to 23 in states with easier access than in states without an\u00a0access provision,\u201d the study said, noting that \u201cthere is no similar spike in suicide rates among those ages\u00a028 to 39\u201d at that time.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Here&#8217;s how the White House describes &#8220;gender-affirming care&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6XHyVxkcSo\">pic.twitter.com\/6XHyVxkcSo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mary Margaret Olohan (@MaryMargOlohan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MaryMargOlohan\/status\/1509572326995771396?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 31, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>States that have the minor access provision include Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, and Vermont, according to the analysis, which notes that there is \u201cno obvious geographic, demographic, or partisan pattern to\u00a0whether states have these provisions.<\/p>\n<p>Before 2010, Green found, state policies allowing minors to access healthcare without parental consent did not really play into the trend in suicide rates among young people aged 12 to 23.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe timing of the increase in suicide rates\u201d raises \u201cserious concerns about the effects of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones on suicide risks, Green wrote, noting that the suicide rates increased \u201conly among young people,\u00a0only after puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones are introduced and\u00a0used widely, and only in states where minors could access those medical\u00a0interventions without parental consent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Heritage Foundation analysis stops short of examining whether people who obtain \u201cgender-related medical interventions are at a higher\u00a0risk of suicide.\u201d\u00a0But it does directly examine \u201cthe state policies that facilitate\u00a0minors accessing those interventions without parental consent and finds\u00a0that those policies raise suicide risks among young people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo believe that easier access to puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones are not the cause of elevated suicide risk in those states, one would\u00a0have to be able to imagine other medical interventions that only became\u00a0widely available after 2010 and would only affect young people,\u201d Green wrote. \u201cThe lack\u00a0of theoretically plausible alternatives strengthens the case for concluding\u00a0that cross-sex medical interventions are the cause of the observed increase\u00a0in suicide among young people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Heritage Foundation report did not analyze a 2019 study published in JAMA Psychiatry, which found that exposure to conversion therapy, \u201ca discredited practice that seeks to<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new analysis by the Heritage Foundation\u00a0calls into question the widespread claim that giving puberty blockers and hormones to children who reject their biological sex prevents suicides \u2013 and grimly suggests the opposite may be true.
