That dethrones the $126 million benchmark set by the debut of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/top-gun-maverick\/\" id=\"auto-tag_top-gun-maverick\" data-tag=\"top-gun-maverick\">Top Gun: Maverick<\/a>\u201d only two weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>After taking home <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/film\/news\/box-office-jurassic-world-dominion-previews-1235290520\/\">$18 million in Thursday previews<\/a>, Universal had projected the sixth installment in the \u201cJurassic Park\u201d franchise to earn $132.5 million moving into the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Stretching back to Steven Spielberg\u2019s 1993 original, which was the <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/film\/box-office\/jurassic-park-steven-spielberg-box-office-domination-1235285202\/\">highest grossing domestic earner ever<\/a> upon release, the \u201cJurassic Park\u201d franchise has a storied box office legacy. The previous two films \u2014 \u201cJurassic World\u201d in 2015 and sequel \u201cFallen Kingdom\u201d in 2018 \u2014 debuted to $208 million and $150 million, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>With a $185 million production price tag before marketing and distribution costs, \u201cJurassic World Dominion\u201d\u00a0will need to continue a run as a box office behemoth to see green.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJurassic World\u201d director Colin Trevorrow returns to the franchise, following up his family-film-cum-suburban-thriller \u201cThe Book of Henry.\u201d \u201cDominion\u201d unites original stars Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern with new age headliners Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard along with series newcomer DeWanda Wise.<\/p>\n<p>Critics have largely disliked \u201cDominion,\u201d with the film earning a series-low 31% approval rating from all critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences seem to be more receptive though, as they usually are with the franchise. The dino-sequel earned an \u201cA-\u201d grade from CinemaScore, indicating strong responses from general ticketbuyers. While this massive opening weekend is generally proving to be a critic-proof affair, it remains to be seen how general word-of-mouth will land in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/film\/reviews\/jurassic-world-dominion-review-1235288084\/\"><em>Variety<\/em>\u2018s review<\/a>, chief film critic Peter Debruge leaned kinder than most of his peers, writing that \u201cDominion\u201d \u201ccomes the closest of the sequels to delivering on the \u2018Jurassic\u2019 franchise\u2019s fearsome threat of human-dinosaur coexistence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though \u201cTop Gun: Maverick\u201d is getting a bite taken out of it by losing premium format theaters to \u201cDominion,\u201d the Tom Cruise sequel is still flying steady. The Paramount release is projected to earn $50 million in its third weekend at the domestic box office, marking an impressive 44% drop from its sophomore outing. That figure would also land the film among the top ten highest grossing third weekends in domestic box office history.<\/p>\n<p>With \u201cMaverick\u201d inching closer to the $400 million domestic mark, the film looks likely to blast past \u201cDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness\u201d as the year\u2019s highest grossing release at the domestic box office sometime in the coming week.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of the \u201cDoctor,\u201d Marvel\u2019s superhero sequel looks to take bronze on domestic charts for the weekend after taking in an additional $1.3 million on Friday. \u201cMultiverse of Madness\u201d should add an additional $4.8 million over the weekend to expand its North American gross to $397 million, inching closer to passing the $400 million mark.<\/p>\n<p>Disney and 20th Century Studios\u2019 \u201cThe Bob\u2019s Burgers Movie\u201d looks to take fourth, projecting a 51% drop to earn $2.2 million. The animated release expanded its domestic gross past $25 million on Friday. While the film has put in a modest box office performance, it hasn\u2019t broken through in a way that would indicate it is reaching many viewers outside of the fanbase of the long-running animated series.<\/p>\n<p>Universal\u2019s \u201cThe Bad Guys\u201d is expected to round out the top five, expanding its domestic gross to $91 million through Sunday. After opening to a modest $24 million eight weeks ago, the DreamWorks Animation production has multiplied its debut by 3.8, benefitting from a lack of family-friendly fare at the box office.
