The burns escaped containment lines and merged into one and became the largest wildfire in state history in mid-May. It has now burned over 300,000 acres.<\/p>\n<p>The prescribed burn that caused the Calf Canyon fire was\u00a0concluded on Jan. 29, but it later reignited, and escaped containment lines on April 19. On April 23, amid strong winds that exacerbated the fire spread, it merged with the Hermits Peak Fire, which was also a prescribed burn that escaped containment lines on April 6.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a responsibility as a government to deal with the communities who are put in such jeopardy,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2022\/06\/11\/remarks-by-president-biden-in-a-briefing-on-the-new-mexico-wildfires\/\">Biden said in Santa Fe<\/a>, New Mexico, at the state\u2019s\u00a0Regional Training Installation Facility. \u201cToday I\u2019m announcing the federal government is covering 100 percent of the cost of debris removal and emergency protective measures for the next critical months.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4527916\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/06\/12\/Calf-Canyon-Hermits-Peak-Fire-1200x791.jpeg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4527916\" src=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/06\/12\/Calf-Canyon-Hermits-Peak-Fire-600x396.jpeg\" alt=\"Ninety Percent Of New Mexico Under Extreme Drought Conditions\" width=\"600\" height=\"396\" \/><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> A structure scorched by the Hermits Peak\/Calf Canyon Fire is seen near Las Vegas, New Mexico, on June 2, 2022. (Mario Tama\/Getty Images)<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe have a responsibility to help this state recover, to help the families who have been here for centuries, and the beautiful northern New Mexico villages who can\u2019t go home and whose livelihoods have been fundamentally changed,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The White House\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/06\/11\/president-joseph-r-biden-jr-amends-new-mexico-disaster-declaration\/\">later announced<\/a> that Biden authorized an increase in percentage of federal funding to remove debris and for other emergency protective measures from 75 percent to 100 percent, \u201cfor the first 90 days of the incident period.\u201d Biden had initially announced the federal government would cover 75 percent of total eligible costs in a disaster declaration for New Mexico on May 4.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 90-day period is designed to serve as a bridge between emergency operations and the potential passage of the pending Hermits Peak Fire Assistance Act legislation that would require FEMA to establish a claims office to enable individuals to apply for a broader range of assistance than what is available under the Stafford Act,\u201d the announcement reads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis additional support will help ensure that New Mexico has no financial limitations related to immediate lifesaving and life sustaining operations related to the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-wildfires\">wildfires<\/a>, including urgent debris removal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden said that the U.S. Forest Service \u201cdo a pretty damn good job\u201d in carrying out some 4,500 prescribed burns each year, of which \u201c99.8 percent go as planned,\u201d but that \u201cthis time, tragically, it did not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that\u2019s why the Forest Service has just put a complete pause on prescribed burns in our\u2014in the Forest Service lands,\u201d Biden continued. \u201cAnd it\u2019s conducting an intensive 90-day review, which will make public all the detail of that review.
