The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/06\/zelenskyy-says-ukraine-is-losing-60-to-100-soldiers-a-day\/\">Ukrainian president<\/a> said that he was taking steps now to \u201cprepare for the next heating season,\u201d which he <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/international\/3515580-zelensky-winter-will-be-most-difficult-for-ukraine\/\">warned<\/a> would be the most difficult since the country gained independence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever the occupiers plan for themselves, we must prepare for the next winter \u2013 in our state, on our land, for all citizens,\u201d Zelenskyy said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe issues of purchasing a sufficient amount of gas for the heating season, coal accumulation, and electricity production were discussed today,\u201d he continued, adding that while the next heating season will be the most difficult since gaining independence, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.president.gov.ua\/en\/news\/mayemo-gotuvatisya-do-nastupnogo-opalyuvalnogo-sezonu-yakij-75689\">everything is alright<\/a>.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must go through it so that our people feel the normal work of the state,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Zelenskyy <a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Latest-Energy-News\/World-News\/Ukraine-To-Halt-Coal-Oil-Gas-Exports-Ahead-Of-Critical-Winter.html\">explained<\/a> how his government would no longer sell coal and gas overseas, and that all domestic production would be refocused to ensure that Ukrainian citizens have access to the fuel they need this winter.\n<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, however, he said that the country will also do everything possible to increase electricity export capabilities, with a view to generating income from the sale of energy to neighboring countries. Zelenskyy also said that plan would help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=51618\">reduce European dependence<\/a> on Russian energy.<\/p>\n<p>Zelenskyy also announced a repair program for thermal power plants that is presently underway, with help being made available to boiler houses and power plants that have been damaged or destroyed by Russian strikes over the last three months.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to emphasize that I have set a very specific task for the government to do everything possible to ensure that gas and electricity tariffs do not change in the next heating season,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>How Much Energy Does Ukraine Sell?<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>As of 2015, Ukraine produced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldometers.info\/gas\/gas-production-by-country\/\">670,985 cubic feet<\/a> of natural gas per year and ranked 36<sup>th<\/sup> in the world for gas production, making the impact of the blocking of Ukrainian gas exports minimal on the global market. Ukraine also imported roughly 43% of its gas the same year, with the country maintaining similar levels of reliance on foreign gas in recent years.\n<\/p>\n<p>Coal will be an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/02\/05\/europe\/gallery\/ukraine-coal-miners\/index.html\">important fuel<\/a> for Ukraine this coming winter. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/international\/analysis\/country\/UKR\">Over 90%<\/a> of the country\u2019s fossil fuel reserves consist of coal, with 38 billion short tons of coal reserves in Ukraine as of 2019, ranking sixth in the world behind the United States, China, India, Australia, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/06\/america-is-using-sanctions-to-wage-a-technology-war-on-russia\/\">Russia<\/a>. Production of coal was steadily declining before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/03\/we-think-we-know-why-russias-invasion-of-ukraine-is-a-disaster\/\">Russian invasion<\/a>, although production is likely to increase in the coming months where possible.\n<\/p>\n<p>With Russian forces in control of 20% of Ukraine, including most of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/05\/putin-has-a-sneaky-plan-to-win-the-battle-for-donbas\/\">industrial regions<\/a>, increasing production will likely be difficult.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jack Buckby is a British author, counter-extremism researcher, and journalist based in New York.
