No one in Canada has a right to defend themselves, their family or their property with a firearm, Trudeau declared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a culture where the difference is:\u00a0Guns can be used for hunting or for sport shooting in Canada \u2013 and there are lots of gun owners, and they\u2019re mostly law-respecting and law-abiding \u2013 but you can\u2019t use a gun for self-protection in Canada,\u201d Trudeau said. \u201cThat\u2019s not a right that you have in the Constitution or anywhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cYou can\u2019t use a gun for self-protection in Canada. It\u2019s not a right that you have,\u201d says Trudeau. <\/p>\n<p>Criminals could potentially harm you and your family with ILLEGAL guns, but YOU, law-abiding citizen, do not have the right to defend yourself with a LEGAL gun. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Lt4oS24TiU\">pic.twitter.com\/Lt4oS24TiU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Roberto Wakerell-Cruz \u271d\ufe0f (@Robertopedia) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Robertopedia\/status\/1535383099147689984?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 10, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The firearms freeze now being considered by lawmakers in Ottawa is Canada\u2019s \u201cmost ambitious attempt yet to restrict access to firearms in this country,\u201d the CBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/handguns-liberal-bill-1.6470554\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Trudeau announced the measure last month shortly after the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, that left 19 children and two teachers dead. Although that attack was carried out by an 18-year-old loner with an AR-15 rifle, it sparked renewed calls for control of firearms, including handguns. Trudeau insisted that the massacre in Texas was not what prompted his effort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s this sense that Canada responded to the shooting in Texas by suddenly turning around and banning guns,\u201d Trudeau said. \u201cBut we\u2019ve been working on this for seven years \u2026 We\u2019ve had a lot of setbacks \u2026 but since we got elected seven years ago, we\u2019ve been steadily working on strengthening gun control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Trudeau-backed measure allows current handgun owners to keep them, but it would cap the number already in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a concrete and real national measure that will go a long way towards keeping Canadians safe,\u201d Trudeau told a news conference in Ottawa.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, Trudeau warned against gun control measures, saying that requirements to register them was a first step toward taking firearms away from citizens.
