The question reads, \u201cWhere do you stand on gun control?\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/blog-briefing-room\/3517974-california-animal-shelter-to-require-those-adopting-pets-to-support-gun-restrictions\/\">The Hill<\/a> reported in a piece published Thursday.\u00a0The owner of the shop, Kim Sill, shared that the shop doesn\u2019t \u201csupport\u201d those who believe the Second Amendment means the \u201cright to buy assault weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that if we can make our voices heard on how we feel, we can make an impact,\u201d the Shelter Hope Pet Shop owner wrote on the website. \u201cWe do not support those who believe that the 2nd amendment gives them the right to buy assault weapons. If your beliefs are not in line with ours, we will not adopt a pet to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you for the kind and thoughtful comments on this post,\u201d the shop\u2019s message on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ShelterHopePetShop\">Facebook<\/a> later read about the policy. \u201cTo the many angry humans who posted comments here I will say it again: I should not have to carry a gun to protect my shelter and to protect my staff, animals and volunteers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have the right to adopt to like minded beings in regard to gun control,\u201d the post added. \u201cMany of your comments are not worthy of a response so I will refrain from posting one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reading through the comments on the shop\u2019s Facebook page, many people voiced their criticism of the shelter\u2019s new criteria, as the owner shared the policy was enacted following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/little-girl-trapped-with-shooter-repeatedly-called-9-1-1-as-police-waited-outside-officials\">Uvalde school shooting<\/a> in Texas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not doing the animals any favors with this attitude,\u201d one person shared. \u201cNobody said you should have to carry a gun to protect yourself either! That\u2019s a CHOICE. The chances of you needing a gun are slim, but I prefer to carry because I feel safer when trave[l]ing, while sleeping, etc. We already have many common-sense gun laws\u2026now they need to use them. Would you rather protect yourself with a knife if a knife-wielding crazy comes at you? I\u2019m more afraid of knives than guns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another wrote, \u201cThere\u2019s a wonderful business strategy\u2026shooting yourself in the foot so you have to work twice as hard finding homes for the pets. Oh, that\u2019s right, they\u2019ll have to remain \u2018animals\u2019 that much longer because you made it that much harder for them to be adopted as \u2018pets.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPets can not have a home because I, as a legal gun owner and an African American woman who lives with daughters, has taken steps to be able to defend myself and my family,\u201d another shared.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the backlash, the same message was posted over and over again attributed to the shop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRepublicans and Democrats need to stop fighting and get together and be Americans first and protect our schools and children,\u201d the shop message read. \u201cThere has to be a compromise and a solution and a way to fix this somewhere in the middle. The second amendment was written 2 centuries ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s perfectly fine if we modernize it to reflect the changes in the country and the new necessities in today\u2019s world,\u201d the message added. \u201cWe have to work together and make gun ownership come with training, periodic examinations, and proof of mental health.
