Greg Abbott claimed that crime in Chicago, which has strict gun control laws, proves the idea of tough gun legislation is \u201cnot a real solution,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/uvalde-shooting-texas-abbott-says-chicago-nyc-crime-gun-laws-not-solution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fox News<\/a>. A similar claim was echoed by Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz at a recent National Rifle Association (NRA) conference, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/uvalde-school-shooting-texas-violence-ap-fact-check-shootings-5d61ed151fa26cf35d26452f01b610b9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Associated Press<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>A post shared on Facebook claims guns are actually illegal in Chicago. \u201cGuns are illegal in Chicago,\u201d reads the post. \u201cYet, Chicago has gun violence every weekend. So, libs, explain how gun control prevents gun violence?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The claim is inaccurate. A city ordinance that banned handgun possession was overturned in 2010 in the Supreme Court case McDonald v. City of Chicago, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/ct-news-cb-greg-abbott-texas-gun-laws-chicago-20220527-pruljwytw5c3zmdaqhrr6q4fki-list.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Chicago Tribune<\/a>. The court ruled the Second Amendment\u2019s \u201cright of the people to keep and bear arms\u201d also applied to state and local government jurisdictions. Therefore the city of Chicago cannot legally ban all guns.<\/p>\n<p>Firearm experts also disagreed with the claim.<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2019\/05\/31\/fact-check-dianne-feinstein-gunman-lay-down-weapons-human-nature\/\">(RELATED: \u2018That\u2019s Just Human Nature\u2019 \u2013 Did Dianne Feinstein Say This Quote About Gun Control?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can say it\u2019s clearly false to state that guns are illegal to own in Chicago,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/law.duke.edu\/fac\/charlesj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jake Charles<\/a>, the executive director of the Center for Firearm Law, said in an email to Check Your Fact, citing the McDonald ruling.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firearmspolicy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Firearms Policy Coalition<\/a>, a gun-rights advocacy group, told Check Your Fact in an email that \u201cat the present time, it would be inaccurate to say that \u2018all firearms are illegal\u2019 (i.e., prohibited to possess) in the City of Chicago, Ill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kelle Bartoli, a spokesperson for the Chicago Police Department, explained that in order to legally purchase a gun in Chicago, residents must have an owner\u2019s license and a concealed carry license.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe State of Illinois requires gun owner licensing (FOID) and a concealed carry license (CCL),\u201d said Bartoli in an email to Check Your Fact. \u201cThose are handled at the State Police level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In order to receive a Firearms Owner Identification (FOID), Illinois residents must have a valid driver\u2019s license and must be \u201celigible,\u201d according to the Illinois State Police <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispfsb.com\/Public\/FOID.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>. The website includes a lengthy list of circumstances that would make someone ineligible, including a felony conviction or a mental disability.<\/p>\n<p>Bartoli also pointed Check Your Fact to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.illinois.gov\/news\/press-release.24921.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent bill<\/a> signed by Democratic Illinois Governor J.B.
