Jackie Speier referred to her brush with death more than 40 years ago in the Jonestown massacre in Guyana. While Speier was shot as she fled the compound where more than 900 people died in a mass murder-suicide, her claim to exclusivity was not accurate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe I\u2019m the only member of this House that is a victim of gun violence,\u201d Speier said Wednesday on the House floor. \u201cMy body is riddled with bullets. I have a divot in my leg that\u2019s the size of a football. I have skin grafts on all parts of my body. I live with that every single day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Wasn&#8217;t aware that Rep. Steve Scalise had left office. Someone on Rep. Leo Ryan (D-CA) \u2014 who was in Jonestown on a fact-finding mission and was killed \u2014 was calling for raising the age to buy AR-15-style rifles to 21, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/news\/house\/3517932-jonestown-survivor-jackie-speier-details-shooting-trauma-stop-shielding-your-eyes\/#:~:text=Jonestown%20settlement%2C%20then%2D-,Rep.%20Leo%20Ryan,-(D)%20of%20California\">reported<\/a> The Hill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a victim of gun violence.\u00a0I know what it does to a body, and I cannot believe that my colleagues don\u2019t recognize that prohibiting the sale of an assault weapon until the age of 21 isn\u2019t going to save lives,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Speier\u2019s personal testimony was dramatic, but it left out Scalise\u2019s near-death experience. The Louisiana lawmaker was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-multiple-shooting-congressional-baseball-joseph-curl\">grievously wounded<\/a> in a mass shooting in 2017 as he and other Congressional Republicans were holding an early morning practice for the annual Congressional baseball game. Steve Scalise had left office,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PaulLadd1\/status\/1534955215744643072?s=20&#038;t=ad0D3EiPUvVghDuSoDKKKQ\">tweeted<\/a> journalist Paul Ladd. \u201cSomeone on Rep. Speier\u2018s staff didn\u2019t do their homework.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJackie Speier was shot by radical democrats in 1978,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/popcornsutton3\/status\/1534954577203699713?s=20&#038;t=_TwCZNrHPEdOMRRv8rt7GQ\">tweeted<\/a> the user popcorn sutton. \u201cSteve Scalise was shot by a radical democrat in 2017.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speier \u201conly thinks what happened to her is important,\u201d the Twitter account @Truth Wins <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nanci1028\/status\/1534962485165297664?s=20&#038;t=_TwCZNrHPEdOMRRv8rt7GQ\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s a \u2018Dem\u2019 thing I guess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The House <a href=\"https:\/\/wgntv.com\/news\/nexstar-media-wire\/house-passes-sweeping-gun-package-in-largely-party-line-vote\/\">passed<\/a> the Protecting Our Kids Act, which would raise the minimum age to buy a semi-automatic weapon from 18 to 21. Its fate in the Senate is uncertain. The push for new gun control laws follows mass shootings in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/shooter-kills-10-wounds-three-in-buffalo-grocery-store-authorities-investigating-as-racially-motivated-attack\">Buffalo<\/a>, on May 14, where 10 people were killed, and at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/uvalde-is-the-second-deadliest-school-shooting-on-record-heres-what-we-know\">Uvalde, Texas elementary school<\/a> 10 days later, where 19 children and two teachers were killed.
