There is no evidence Pitchfork published such an article.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span>Fact Check:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stevens received a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grammy.com\/artists\/sufjan-stevens\/243557\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grammy Award nomination<\/a> for his song \u201cMystery Of Love\u201d in the 2017 film \u201cCall Me By Your Name.\u201d He previously discussed his Christian faith with Australia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/doublej\/music-reads\/features\/sufjan-stevens-feature-ascension-america-video-game\/12711108\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ABC<\/a> in 2020 as well as The Atlantic in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/entertainment\/archive\/2015\/03\/sufjan-stevens-and-a-better-way-to-write-music-about-faith\/388802\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2015 article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Instagram post, liked over 1,700 times, appears to show a screenshot of a Pitchfork article from music and culture journalist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huss.works\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Allison Hussey<\/a> titled, \u201cSufjan Stevens Has Converted To Islam.\u201d The article claims Stevens announced his conversion in a Tumblr blog.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI<span class=\"_aacl _aaco _aacu _aacx _aad7 _aade\">t was only a matter of time,\u201d the Instagram caption reads in response. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2020\/04\/30\/fact-check-video-first-islamic-call-prayer-spain-500-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Does This Video Show The First Islamic Call To Prayer In Spain In 500 Years?)<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The screenshot is digitally fabricated. Pitchfork\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/search\/?query=Sufjan%20Stevens%20Islam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a> does not feature any reports about Stevens converting to Islam. The claim is also absent from the outlet\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=Sufjan%20Stevens%20Islam%20(from%3Apitchfork)&#038;src=typed_query\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social media<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/page\/28015075999\/search\/?q=sufjan%20stevens%20Islam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">posts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hussey responded to the claim via <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/allisonhussey\/status\/1532380983542022148\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twitter<\/a>, calling the screenshot fake.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I have been getting questions about this screenshot that is circulating. it is fake! I do not know the status of Sufjan\u2019s ~*spiritual journey~* <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BzLRvrAOQk\">pic.twitter.com\/BzLRvrAOQk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Allison Hussey (@allisonhussey) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/allisonhussey\/status\/1532380983542022148?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 2, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There are no credible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=Sufjan+Stevens+converts+to+Islam&#038;oq=Su&#038;aqs=chrome.1.69i59l3j69i57j69i59j69i60j69i61j69i60.1829j0j7&#038;sourceid=chrome&#038;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">news reports<\/a> suggesting Stevens has switched religions or has expressed interest in doing so. No such announcement appears on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sufjan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instagram<\/a> account.<\/p>\n<p>Stevens has stated that his first name means \u201ccomes with a sword,\u201d and that it is \u201ca charming militaristic Muslim name,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/thevogue.com\/artists\/sufjan-stevens\/#bio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vogue<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time a notable individual has been the target of a false conversion claim. Check Your Fact previously <a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/05\/20\/fact-check-george-w-bush-daughter-hijab-islam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">debunked<\/a> a viral May 2021 post that alleged a daughter of former President George W.
