Bennie Thompson to invoke the Ku Klux Klan, slavery and lynching during Thursday\u2019s opening statements of the Jan. 6 hearings.<\/p>\n<p>Committee chairman Thompson delivered the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/read-full-text-chair-bennie-thompsons-remarks-first-jan-6-hearing-rcna32885\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">opening statement<\/a> of the hearings investigating the Jan. 6 riot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am from a part of the country where people justified the actions of slavery, the Ku Klux Klan and lynching,\u201d Thompson said. \u201cI\u2019m reminded of that dark history as I hear voices today try and justify the actions of the insurrectionists on January 6th, 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of us have one thing in common: we swore the same oath,\u201d Thompson continued. \u201cThe same oath that all Members of Congress take upon taking office and afterward every two years if they are reelected. We swore an oath to defend the Constitution, against all enemies: foreign and domestic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe words of the current oath taken by all of us \u2014 that nearly every United States Government employees takes \u2014 have their roots in the Civil War,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">It took Benny Thompson just minutes to start invoking \u201cslavery, the klu klux klan and lynching\u201d during his opening of the Jan. 6th Committee Hearing <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cTPZMoOvI9\">pic.twitter.com\/cTPZMoOvI9<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Daily Caller (@DailyCaller) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DailyCaller\/status\/1535052562315214848?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 10, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Thompson noted how the 1814 burning of the Capitol was due to foreign enemies, but then explained that after the South seceded from the Union, \u201cCongress adopted a new oath to help make sure no person who had supported the rebellion could hold a position of public trust. Therefore, congresspersons and U.S. Federal Government employees were required for the first time to swear an oath to defend the Constitution against all enemies \u2014 foreign and domestic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat oath was put to the test on January 6, 2021.\u201d<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/09\/opinion-january-6th-committee-is-all-about-politics-and-pelosis-coverubanks-jordan-nehls-armstrong-and-davis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: BANKS, JORDAN, NEHLS, ARMSTRONG, And DAVIS: Don\u2019t Fall For Nancy Pelosi\u2019s Elaborate January 6th Coverup)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/07\/democrats-new-york-times-jan-6-hearings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">committee<\/a> has subpoenaed more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/12\/07\/politics\/january-6-committee-phone-records\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">100 individuals<\/a>, interviewed nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jan-6-hearing-targets-interviews-029d6a76146b4735b9e05bb70f41916f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1,000 witnesses<\/a> and has roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/news\/2022\/06\/06\/january-6-committee-jamie-raskin-public-hearings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">100,000 pages<\/a> of evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Speaker of the House <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/09\/elise-stefanik-nancy-pelosi-january-6th-hearings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nancy Pelosi<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/21\/nancy-pelosi-rejects-two-republicans-january-6-select-committee-jim-jordan-jim-banks-capitol-riot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">barred<\/a> Republican Reps. Jim Jordan of Ohio and Jim Banks of Indiana from serving on the committee. Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney and Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger were permitted to serve on the committee.<\/p>\n<p>The committee told <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/09\/jan-6-committee-2024-elections-democrats-politico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Politico<\/a> they want viewers to be outraged about the incident going into 2024.
