About 56% said they strongly support school choice, and nearly 17% said they somewhat support it.\u00a0Only 24% of Oregonians said they oppose school choice, and less than 17% said they strongly oppose it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOregonians are demanding more options for parents and kids. It\u2019s time politicians began to listen to the choices of parents instead of imposing their own will on students,\u201d MacKensey Pulliam, president and co-founder of Oregon Moms Union told The Daily Wire.<\/p>\n<p>A majority, 57%, also said they support school vouchers, which help parents pay to send their child to a private school rather than a public school. Only 35% said they oppose school vouchers.<\/p>\n<p>About 70% said they support open enrollment, which allows parents to send their child to the public school of their choice, even if the school is not in their district. Oregon allowed open enrollment from 2012 to 2019, but it is now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregon.gov\/ode\/schools-and-districts\/Pages\/transfers-between-districts.aspx\">illegal<\/a>. Less than 22% said they oppose open enrollment.<\/p>\n<p>A majority, 63%, also said they support taxpayer-funded education savings accounts, which help parents pay for their child\u2019s education expenses such as private tutoring or textbooks.<\/p>\n<p>Majorities also said they would support legislation to give parents more school choice and eliminate virtual charter school caps.<\/p>\n<p>A majority, 54%, said they agreed with the statement, \u201cSchool choice strengthens our education system because it allows parents and\u00a0students to choose the education that best serves their needs.\u201d\u00a0Less than 33% said they agreed with the statement, \u201cSchool choice weakens our education system because it potentially takes\u00a0money out of local public schools that are already struggling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The poll surveyed 727 Oregon voters in early June and has a\u00a03.6% margin of error. It was conducted by Oregon-based public opinion survey research firm\u00a0Nelson Research.<\/p>\n<p>Oregon has received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/education\/2021\/08\/oregon-school-board-politics-have-never-been-so-polarized-partisan-and-hostile-to-racial-equity.html\">backlash<\/a> from parents for adopting progressive policies in its K-12 public schools over the last several years.<\/p>\n<p>Oregon\u2019s state education board adopted updated health education <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregon.gov\/ode\/educator-resources\/standards\/health\/Documents\/2016ORHEStandards.pdf\">standards<\/a> in 2016 requiring kindergarteners and first-graders to\u00a0come up with examples of \u201chow friends and family influence how people think they should act on the basis of their\u00a0gender.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In second grade, children in Oregon are taught how to\u00a0\u201crecognize differences and similarities of how individuals identify regarding\u00a0gender,\u201d and in third grade, the kids must be able to\u00a0\u201cdefine sexual orientation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the\u00a0\u201cMenstrual Dignity Act,\u201d which was <a href=\"https:\/\/olis.oregonlegislature.gov\/liz\/2021R1\/Downloads\/MeasureDocument\/HB3294\/Enrolled\">passed<\/a> last year by the Democrat-controlled Oregon legislature and signed by Governor Kate Brown,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/parents-social-media-react-to-oregon-requiring-tampons-in-boys-school-bathrooms\">requires<\/a> that all Oregon public schools provide free menstrual products like tampons and pads in boys and all-gender restrooms by the end of the upcoming school year, including at elementary schools.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the Oregon Moms Union <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/desantis-joined-oregon-parents-push-school-curriculum-transparency-1693161\">called out<\/a> an elementary school in the\u00a0North Clackamas School District, saying the school gave fifth graders\u00a0a lesson about gender identity that included a graphic called the \u201cGenderbread Person\u201d without getting parents\u2019 permission.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A majority of Oregon voters think public K-12 education is heading in the wrong direction and would prefer to see tax dollars follow students, according to a new poll provided exclusively to The Daily Wire.
