The nation is a major exporter of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mia.co.nz\/\">meat<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gtreview.com\/magazine\/volume-15issue-5\/milk-new-zealands-dairy-exports-conquered-world\/\">dairy<\/a> products: roughly 5 million people live in New Zealand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-61741352\">compared<\/a> to 10 million cattle and 26 million sheep.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no question that we need to cut the amount of methane we are putting into the atmosphere, and an effective emissions pricing system for agriculture will play a key part in how we achieve that,\u201d Climate Change Minister James Shaw <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/new-zealand-unveils-plan-to-slap-a-tax-on-cow-and-sheep-burps-to-cut-greenhouse-gas-methane-12630579\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Until now, animal emissions have not been included in <a href=\"https:\/\/environment.govt.nz\/what-government-is-doing\/areas-of-work\/climate-change\/ets\/\">the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme<\/a>, but under the proposed plan farmers would have to pay for their livestock\u2019s gas emissions from 2025 onward. Methane gas is a more potent greenhouse gas in the short term, \u201cmore than 25 times as potent as carbon dioxide,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/gmi\/importance-methane\">EPA<\/a>. Still, it\u00a0generally leaves the atmosphere after <a href=\"https:\/\/clear.ucdavis.edu\/explainers\/why-methane-cattle-warms-climate-differently-co2-fossil-fuels\">roughly a decade<\/a>, while CO2 can remain in the atmosphere for <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.nasa.gov\/news\/2915\/the-atmosphere-getting-a-handle-on-carbon-dioxide\/\">centuries<\/a>. Consequently, climate change activists have <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/431119-ocasio-cortez-explains-farting-cows-comment-weve-got-to-address-factory\/\">often singled out regulating the meat industry<\/a> as a key policy to achieve a rapid reduction in global warming, but New Zealand would be the first nation to tax belching and flatulence.<\/p>\n<p>The plan would incentivize farmers to reduce methane emissions via additives to animal feed or carbon capture methods such as planting more trees on farms. The revenue from the tax would finance research and development as well as advisory services for farmers.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Hoggard, a dairy farmer and the national president of Federated Farmers of New Zealand, said he largely approves of the plan in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/newsround\/61747986#:~:text=%22We&#039;ve%20been%20working%20with,New%20Zealand%2C%20told%20the%20BBC.\">statement<\/a> provided to the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been working with the government and other organisations on this for years to get an approach that won\u2019t shut down farming in New Zealand, so we\u2019ve signed off on a lot of stuff we\u2019re happy with,\u201d he said. \u201cBut you know, like all of these types of agreements with many parties involved, there\u2019s always going to be a couple of dead rats you have to swallow.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New Zealand has revealed plans to tax burps and farts from livestock in an attempt to reduce its emissions of methane gas.
