In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/europe\">Europe<\/a>, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/gas-prices\">fuel costs<\/a> are much higher.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the conflict in Ukraine, Russia \u2014 the world\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/international\/rankings\/world?pa=12&#038;u=0&#038;f=A&#038;v=none&#038;y=01%2F01%2F2019\">third-largest<\/a> producer of energy as of 2019 \u2014 has cut off <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/04\/27\/energy\/russia-europe-gas-supply\/index.html\">natural gas<\/a> supplies to many European nations. Meanwhile, sanctions against Russia have also severed many Europeans from a major source of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2022\/05\/31\/oil-prices-surge-gas-hits-new-high-after-eu-cracks-down-russia\/\">gasoline<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, gas prices in leading European economies are significantly higher than in the United States. Citizens of Germany, for example, are purchasing gas at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalpetrolprices.com\/Germany\/gasoline_prices\/\">$7.89<\/a> per gallon as of June 6. In the United Kingdom, Spain, and France, prices at the pump are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalpetrolprices.com\/United-Kingdom\/gasoline_prices\/\">$8.32<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalpetrolprices.com\/Spain\/gasoline_prices\/\">$8.40<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalpetrolprices.com\/France\/gasoline_prices\/\">$8.57<\/a>, respectively. Prices are especially high in Scandinavia \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalpetrolprices.com\/Sweden\/gasoline_prices\/\">$9.33<\/a> in Sweden, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalpetrolprices.com\/Finland\/gasoline_prices\/\">$10.13<\/a> in Finland, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalpetrolprices.com\/Denmark\/gasoline_prices\/\">$10.32<\/a> in Denmark, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalpetrolprices.com\/Norway\/gasoline_prices\/\">$10.82<\/a> in Norway.<\/p>\n<p>British Conservative Alliance head of research Connor Tomlinson told The Daily Wire that America\u2019s \u201cfall from grace as a leading exporter\u201d prompted Britain to rely upon Russia and other hostile powers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere Trump still in office, and our Prime Minister less beholden to green lobbyists, I don\u2019t doubt we\u2019d have signed a deal securing cleaner and reliable oil and gas,\u201d Tomlinson remarked.<\/p>\n<p>As of Thursday, average national gas prices in the United States are <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\">$4.97<\/a> per gallon. In California, which has particularly harsh regulations on gas consumption, the cost per gallon is <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/?state=CA\">$6.40<\/a>. Nevertheless, in the United States, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/the-cost-of-gas-has-more-than-doubled-since-the-day-biden-took-office\">gas prices have more than doubled<\/a> since the time President Joe Biden assumed office.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the Biden administration have dismissed the high prices \u2014 or suggested that they will lead to a more favorable green energy adoption.<\/p>\n<p>After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-slammed-for-remarks-on-enormously-high-gas-prices-theyre-saying-the-quiet-part-out-loud-now\">questions<\/a> from a reporter about \u201cenormously high gas prices\u201d last month, President Joe Biden said: \u201cWhen it comes to the gas prices, we\u2019re going through an incredible transition that is taking place that, God willing, when it\u2019s over, we\u2019ll be stronger and the world will be stronger and less reliant on fossil fuels when this is over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/energy-sec-granholm-soaring-gas-prices-are-an-exclamation-point-that-u-s-must-accelerate-green-energy-push\">contended<\/a> that soaring gas prices are an \u201cexclamation point\u201d to transition away from fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one has ever weaponized access to the sun,\u201d Granholm said in reference to Russia\u2019s move to cancel energy exports. \u201cNo one has ever weaponized access to wind. The way we are energy secure is to build homegrown clean energy, and other countries are looking to that as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Europe generally has a higher level of regulation upon fossil fuels than the United States. As of 2018, the United Kingdom taxes gasoline for road use at $3.49 per gallon. In Germany, France, and Spain, drivers pay $2.86, $2.73, and $1.99 per gallon, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/afdc.energy.gov\/data\/10327\">data<\/a> from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).<\/p>\n<p>Tomlinson added that although gas prices in Britain have always been higher than in the United States, a series of policy decisions over the last two decades has worsened the problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe abandoned domestic gas production in the North Sea after a peak in 2000,\u201d Tomlinson explained. \u201cWe became net importers in 2005, and doubly tax our energy sources with a value-added tax (VAT) \u2014 something the Brexiteers promised to scrap once we left the EU, but have failed to do so \u2014 and a fuel duty tax.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although the fuel duty tax was lowered by five pence per liter (about $0.24 per gallon) earlier this year, inflationary pressures led to a functional tax increase of seven pence per liter (about $0.33 per gallon) \u2014 meaning that drivers are \u201cstill paying two pence per liter at the pump higher than pre-pandemic levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBusinesses can claim VAT back, but consumers cannot, so working families are being priced out of automobile ownership,\u201d Tomlinson said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many Americans find themselves bending over backward to afford prices at the pump quickly approaching $5 per gallon.
