Roske was arrested outside Kavanaugh\u2019s home earlier in the day and allegedly told authorities that he intended to kill Kavanaugh over the Supreme Court\u2019s possible decision to overturn <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThreats of violence and actual violence against the justices strike at the heart of our democracy,\u201d Attorney General Merrick Garland said following the arrest.<\/p>\n<p>Roske arrived outside Kavanaugh\u2019s home carrying a backpack and a suitcase, Special Agent Ian Montijo wrote in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-md\/press-release\/file\/1511646\/download\">criminal complaint<\/a> against the would-be assassin. Roske saw two U.S. deputy marshals guarding the home and turned away to walk down the street before calling a Montgomery County, Maryland, police hotline to say he was thinking of killing himself. Police took him into custody and began interviewing the man, who allegedly admitted to planning Kavanaugh\u2019s murder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoske then told the detective that he was upset about the leak of a recent Supreme Court draft decision regarding the right to abortion as well as the recent school shooting in Uvalde, Texas,\u201d Montijo wrote in the complaint. \u201cRoske indicated that the Justice that he intended to kill would side with Second Amendment decisions that would loosen gun control laws.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoske stated that he began thinking about how to give his life a purpose and decided that he would kill the Supreme Court Justice after finding the Justice\u2019s Montgomery County address on the Internet. Roske further indicated that he had purchased the Glock pistol and the other items for the purpose of breaking into the Justice\u2019s residence and killing the Justice as well as himself,\u201d Montijo added.<\/p>\n<p>Montijo noted that a search of Roske\u2019s backpack and suitcase \u201crevealed a black tactical chest rig and tactical knife, a Glock 17 pistol with two magazines and ammunition, pepper spray, zip ties, a hammer, screwdriver, nail punch, crow bar, pistol light, duct tape, hiking boots with padding on the outside of the soles, and other items.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roske was charged with \u201cAttempts to kidnap or murder, or threatens to assault, kidnap or murder a United States Judge, to wit: a current Justice of the United States Supreme Court.\u201d If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Federal agents raided the home of the man charged with the attempted murder of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
