However, the Democrat emphasized while campaigning for attorney general that he fought \u201cpublic corruption\u201d during his career and has \u201cno tolerance\u201d for it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I also put myself in harm\u2019s way to take on the hard cases, the tough cases,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3aMvcZ0NL78&#038;t=613s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> in a 2018 primary debate. \u201cThat means I did public corruption work and I did it involving Democrats and Republicans. A lot of Christmas cards in northeast Ohio have my name crossed out because of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?ref=search&#038;v=620833974936415&#038;external_log_id=831dff96-6c30-44af-b52b-22f51b76bc16&#038;q=dettelbach%20%20attorney%20general\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">campaign<\/a> ad, Dettelbach said that holding power accountable is \u201ctough but fair\u201d and means \u201cdoing the right thing by the people of Ohio.\u201d Appearing on an <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/podcast_ohio-democratic-podcast_zero-tolerance-for-public-corr_1000380818046\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">episode<\/a> of a podcast by the Ohio Democrats in 2017, Dettelbach said there is no such thing as \u201ca small bribe\u201d or \u201ca little bribe\u201d and that \u201canybody who is doing this needs to go to jail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, one of Dettelbach\u2019s clients at Baker &#038; Hostetler included Charles Rizzo, a former garbage-hauling company CEO who was handed a 66-month prison sentence in 2018 for conspiring to commit bribery and wire fraud in connection with municipal garbage contracts worth millions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-edmi\/pr\/trash-titan-charles-b-chuck-rizzo-sentenced-66-months-prison-bribery-and-fraud\">according<\/a> to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). Rizzo also embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars from his own company, the DOJ said.<\/p>\n<p>Karen Paulsen, a former employee contractor for the information technology consulting company Booz Allen Hamilton who Dettelbach lists as representing, pleaded guilty in March to helping rig \u201clucrative\u201d contracts for Air Forcer flight simulators, San Antonio Express-News <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/iIIgN#selection-1771.0-1771.13\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7444274\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7444274\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">WASHINGTON, DC \u2013 APRIL 11: U.S. President Joe Bidens nominee to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Steve Dettelbach speaks during an event about gun violence in the Rose Garden of the White House April 11, 2022 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Drew Angerer\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Dettelbach also represented Eli Taieb, who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/southflorida\/news\/2019\/08\/12\/3-south-florida-men-face-federal-fraud-charges.html\">charged<\/a> in 2019 with securities fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy to commit securities fraud after two FBI agents went undercover to expose his hemp stock manipulation scheme. Taieb pled guilty to conspiracy in a hearing Tuesday, according to a court filing.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 6\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>\u201cThe objects of the conspiracy included, but were not limited to: defrauding the investors; obtaining investor monies and pay[ing] and receive[ing] undisclosed commissions; inflating the value of the Manipulated Public Companies; and enriching the conspirators,\u201d the filing states.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Biden nominee\u2019s ethics filing covers who has paid him year-to-date and in 2021. He has raked in more than $1.7 million in partnership share distributions through Baker &#038; Hostetler, the report shows, and at least $5,000 for each of Rizzo and Taieb\u2019s cases.<\/p>\n<p>Dettelbach declined a request for comment by TheDCNF, and Baker &#038; Hostetler did not respond.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/11\/biden-atf-nominee-steve-dettelbach\/\"><strong>(RELATED: Here\u2019s What You Need To Know About Biden\u2019s New ATF Nominee)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tom Jones, executive director of the federal watchdog American Accountability Foundation, told TheDCNF that Dettelbach\u2019s choice in clients raises questions about his commitment to holding power accountable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSenators should be really suspicious of the commitments of Steve,\u201d said Jones, whose group helped sink Biden\u2019s prior ATF Director pick David Chipman <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/09\/white-house-withdraw-david-chipman-atf-nominee-gun-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in<\/a> September 2021. \u201cHe\u2019s lied to the people of Ohio. He told them he was going to root out corruption and that it was his number one issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an ethics plan Dettelbach <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180401061721\/https:\/\/steveforohio.com\/ethics-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">released<\/a> during his campaign, he claimed he sought to \u201cstrengthen protections for witnesses who report waste, fraud and corruption\u201d and \u201ccommence a day one, top-to-bottom review of Ohio\u2019s anti-corruption, transparency and ethics laws.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Steve Loomis, the former police union head in Cleveland who sparred with Dettelbach in Ohio during the Obama administration, told TheDCNF he agrees with Jones. He called Dettelbach \u201cagenda-driven\u201d and \u201cself-motivated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ATF declined a request for comment, as did The White House. The White House pointed TheDCNF to the fact that Dettelbach served on the bipartisan Ohio Ethics Commission \u2014 a <a href=\"https:\/\/ethics.ohio.gov\/about\/index.html\">group<\/a> that \u201cpromotes ethics in public service to strengthen the public\u2019s confidence that government business is conducted with impartiality and integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen he lost the election, he went and cashed in and represented corrupt people,\u201d Jones added. \u201cThe guy\u2019s not trustworthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
