Ron DeSantis (R.) signed into law in 2019, the state appealed the decision, and 17 attorneys general filed an amicus brief on the Sunshine State\u2019s behalf.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Sanctuary cities have become havens for illegal aliens and all the social, economic, and criminal costs that illegal immigration entails,&#8221; Texas attorney general Ken Paxton (R.), one of the brief&#8217;s signatories, said Tuesday in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasattorneygeneral.gov\/news\/releases\/ag-paxton-joins-amicus-brief-support-floridas-ban-sanctuary-cities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. &#8220;The Florida law simply required local law enforcement officials to comply with federal immigration law.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">At least a dozen states have banned cities from impeding immigration enforcement against undocumented immigrants. Nearly half of voters see illegal immigration as a critical threat to U.S. interests in the next 10 years, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.morningconsult.com\/wp-uploads\/2021\/09\/01065758\/2108171_crosstabs_POLITICO_RVs_v1_SH-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poll conducted<\/a> by Morning Consult and <em>Politico<\/em>. Illegal immigration has skyrocketed under the Biden administration. Customs and Border Patrol encountered a record <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/stats\/nationwide-encounters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1.6 million illegal immigrants<\/a>\u00a0during the 2021 fiscal year, and officials <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/biden-administration\/biden-big-immigration-decision-least-popular-of-presidency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expect<\/a> that number to rise to 2.3 million in 2022.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">DeSantis in 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/govrondesantis\/status\/1139596296619212800?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> he was proud to &#8220;uphold the rule of law and ensure that our communities are safe&#8221; by keeping sanctuary cities out of Florida.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than one-third of state attorneys general have come out in defense of Florida&#8217;s ban on sanctuary cities.
