The Functional Government Initiative (FGI) began investigating the IRS in February but, after months of conversations, the agency blocked FGI from accessing documents discussing updates about their investigation into the source of the leak, Pete McGinnis, an FGI spokesman, told The Daily Caller News Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey seem to be more transparent with information they are supposed to keep confidential than with documents that should be part of the public record,\u201d McGinnis told TheDCNF.<\/p>\n<p>The FGI is asking the court to force the IRS to hand over documents about the findings of its investigation through the Freedom of Information Act and to take over the investigation, according to the complaint provided to TheDCNF.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith a breach as detrimental to the integrity of the IRS as this, one would think that the agency that has access to every American\u2019s private financial information would do everything in their power to discover the source quickly and in a manner that revives public trust in the Service,\u201d McGinnis said in a press release. \u201cThe systemic issues that allowed the leak, however, appear to be just the latest example of dysfunction plaguing the Service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The massive IRS leak and the agency\u2019s apparent inability to determine how the leak occurred raise questions about taxpayers\u2019 ability to trust them with their confidential financial records, according to McGinnis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmericans are required to provide their most sensitive financial information to the IRS,\u201d he said. \u201cThey expect this information to have the highest level of protection. The inability of the IRS to not only protect this information but, beyond that, to identify the source of the leak after a year is infuriating and every day that passes will further erode the trust America expects and deserves. (Photo by Zach Gibson\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>House Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Kevin Brady and Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Mike Crapo sent a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gop-waysandmeans.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/4-18-2022-Brady-Crapo-to-Yellen_FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">letter<\/a> April 18 to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen requesting an update on the investigation into the leaks, but did not receive any answers, <a href=\"https:\/\/gop-waysandmeans.house.gov\/irs-chief-continued-silence-on-irs-leak-investigation-threatens-taxpayer-trust\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to an April 22 press release.<\/p>\n<p>Republican Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan and Republican California Rep. Darrell Issa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/517566086\/Letter-to-Inspector-General-for-Tax-Administration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sent<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/27\/jim-jordan-darrell-issa-internal-revenue-service-propublica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">letters<\/a> to the IRS and the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) in July 2021 demanding information on the investigation into the leak. Jordan confirmed to TheDCNF on Wednesday that he has received no updates about the investigation besides an initial reply to his letter.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThe delay in getting answers for the public certainly impacts the ability of the public to have trust and respect for the Internal Revenue Service,\u201d IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HnFJK_CxWgE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> in April 21 testimony to the House Oversight Committee. \u201cTaxpayer security and protection of their data is really one of the highest priorities of the Internal Revenue Service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rettig declined to answer several questions about the IRS\u2019s ability to track which employees access certain tax documents and referred the committee to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.<\/p>\n<p>Republican lawmakers have echoed FGI\u2019s concerns, with Jordan arguing that Americans can\u2019t trust the IRS to keep their data private. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/13\/wilford-the-irss-delays-are-costing-you-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: The IRS\u2019s Delays Are Costing You Money)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know if the IRS is on top of it. It sure doesn\u2019t seem like it from the response we got back from them,\u201d Jordan <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/23\/jim-jordan-irs-treasury-propublica-leak-billionaire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> TheDCNF in April.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmericans need to know that your tax returns remain confidential.
