Wade<\/a><\/em>. If <em>Roe<\/em>\u00a0is overturned, almost all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/abortion\">abortions<\/a> would be illegal in Wisconsin under current state law.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m calling the Legislature into special session on June 22 to repeal Wisconsin\u2019s criminal abortion ban. With [SCOTUS] poised to overturn [<em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>], failing to protect reproductive rights will have real consequences for each of us and the people who matter most to us,\u201d Evers <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovEvers\/status\/1534539047359729665\">tweeted<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since both chambers of the Wisconsin legislature are controlled by Republicans, Evers\u2019 special session will likely fall flat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery single Wisconsinite should have the right to consult their family, their faith, and their doctor to make a reproductive healthcare decision that is right for them,\u201d Evers added in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He also tweeted that overturning <em>Roe<\/em> would have \u201cdisastrous consequences\u201d and that the move was \u201cabout empathy, compassion, and doing the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, a leaked Supreme Court opinion draft written by Justice Samuel Alito was published by Politico. The draft indicated that both <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> and <em>Planned Parenthood v. Casey<\/em>, would likely be overturned, returning abortion policy to the states.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpr.org\/leaked-opinion-would-repeal-roe-v-wade-rocks-wisconsin-races-governor-us-senate\">seeking<\/a> to challenge Evers in November, including former Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch, Trump-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2022\/06\/02\/donald-trump-endorses-tim-michels-wisconsin-governor\/7488047001\/\">endorsed<\/a> construction executive Tim Michels, former Marine Kevin Nicholson, and state Rep. Tim Ramthun all have expressed support for the overturning of <em>Roe<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty, <a href=\"https:\/\/will-law.org\/abortion-in-wisconsin-what-happens-if-roe-v-wade-is-overturned\/\">almost<\/a> all abortions would be illegal if <em>Roe<\/em> is overturned, and abortionists could be charged and convicted for performing the procedure. However, Democrat Attorney General Josh Kaul has already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisn.com\/article\/state-attorney-general-says-he-wouldnt-enforce-abortion-ban\/39909730\">said<\/a> he would not enforce the abortion ban if <em>Roe<\/em> were overturned though local officials could.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Eric Toney, a candidate seeking the Republican nomination to challenge Kaul and district attorney for Fond du Lac County, has said he would enforce Wisconsin\u2019s abortion ban and criticized the incumbent for his stance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have an attorney general that has effectively said he\u2019s going to abdicate his responsibility because he doesn\u2019t like the law,\u201d Toney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2022\/05\/04\/attorney-general-candidate-eric-toney-would-enforce-abortion-ban\/9645887002\/\">said<\/a>. \u201cThat makes him unfit to hold that office.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wisconsin Democratic Governor Tony Evers announced Wednesday that he was calling a special session of the Wisconsin legislature to repeal the state\u2019s criminal ban on abortion.\u00a0 Evers made the announcement ahead of the release of a Supreme Court decision that might overturn Roe v.
