The average price is $5.72 for a gallon of diesel, another record.<\/p>\n<p>As the nationwide average for regular unleaded approaches $5 per gallon, residents in 17 states and the District of Columbia are already facing steeper prices. Californians are paying an average of $6.39 per gallon. Analysts at JPMorgan Chase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/gas-prices-could-reach-6-a-gallon-by-summer-jpmorgan\/\">predict<\/a> a nationwide average of $6.20 by August. <\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, President Joe Biden\u2019s commerce secretary, Gina Raimondo, a potential post-midterm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/commerce-secretary-gina-raimondo-seen-taking-janet-yellens-job-at-treasury-after-midterm-elections-11654285852\">replacement<\/a> for Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, regurgitated the White House line blaming Russia as the primary culprit for rising prices. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is, in large part, caused by [Russian President Vladimir] Putin\u2019s aggression,\u201d Raimondo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/06\/07\/politics\/raimondo-gas-prices-white-house-cnntv\/index.html\">told <\/a>CNN, citing gas prices rising more than $1.40 since the Russia-Ukraine war began. Never mind that gas prices were already climbing well before Putin\u2019s attack. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220223200808\/https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\">According<\/a> to AAA, the nationwide average for a gallon of regular unleaded the day before Russia launched its invasion was $3.54, up from $2.65 the same day one year prior. Now gas prices are more than double what they were the month Biden took office in January of last year, when the national average was $2.42 per gallon. The spike in prices is a direct consequence of the administration\u2019s continued animosity toward domestic energy projects involving fossil fuels. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president is asking for Congress and others for potential ideas,\u201d Raimondo said, after Biden ordered the \u201cunprecedented\u201d release of 1 million barrels of oil from the strategic oil reserves for 180 days to little effect. \u201cThe reality is that there isn\u2019t much more to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Biden even <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/05\/24\/biden-celebrates-record-high-gas-prices-as-incredible-transition\/\">celebrated<\/a> rising gas prices as \u201can incredible transition\u201d during a trip to Japan. \u201cWhen it\u2019s over, we\u2019ll be stronger and the world will be stronger and less reliant on fossil fuels,\u201d Biden said. <\/p>\n<p>Beyond sticker shock at the pump, Americans are coping with inflation rising at its fastest pace in four decades. Overall energy prices were up more than 30 percent in April compared to last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/pdf\/cpi.pdf\">according <\/a>to the Department of Labor. <\/p>\n<p>To accelerate the transition from fossil fuels, even in the face of reliability obstacles presented by the alternative wind and solar, Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/07\/bidens-latest-abuse-of-power-will-make-energy-more-expensive\/\">announced<\/a> a push toward solar, waiving tariffs on panels and invoking the Defense Production Act.<\/p>\n<p>Promoting solar power, however, will do little for Americans facing astronomical gas prices and the ripple effects across the economy due to higher costs of transportation and production. Meanwhile, adding more solar to the energy mix raises the risk of routine blackouts on the power grid, which is already <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/05\/24\/report-deadly-summer-blackouts-inevitable-as-renewables-struggle-to-replace-reliable-energy\/\">forecast<\/a> to suffer periodic outages this summer. <\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Tristan Justice is the western correspondent for The Federalist.
