And that\u2019s exactly what USA Today not-so-subtly tried to do in its recent article \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2022\/06\/07\/gun-laws-poll-republicans-uvalde\/7524705001\/\">Half of Republicans support stricter gun laws, a double-digit jump in a year<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe increase in GOP support\u00a0\u2014 from 35% last year to 50% \u2014 could boost the prospects for Congress to tighten federal gun laws, an effort that has failed for decades,\u201d the article argued.<\/p>\n<p>Even if those results are accurate \u2014 which is highly unlikely and something Americans should never assume about polls, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/11\/12\/yes-the-2020-polling-was-terrible-and-theres-no-excuse\/\">especially after the 2020 election<\/a> \u2014 further down in the article, you see that both Democrats and Republicans don\u2019t actually think guns are the driving factor for shootings like those in Buffalo, New York; Uvalde, Texas; and Tulsa, Oklahoma. <\/p>\n<p>At least 80 percent of red and blue voters agree that the \u201cmental health system bears at least some responsibility for mass shootings.\u201d More than 50 percent of Republicans and Democrats also blame violent video games for the rise in shootings in movie theaters, grocery stores, churches, schools, and other public areas.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s still an alarming number, two-thirds, of Democrats who think former President Donald Trump, who has been out of office for nearly a year and a half, is somewhat to blame for recent shooting tragedies (which further reveals the absurdity of these polls). Approximately 42 percent of Republicans say they blame President Joe Biden, a number that\u2019s risen significantly since last year when it was 27 percent. A high percentage of Democrats are also more likely to think that factors such as racism and white nationalism were the root cause of these shootings.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line is that voters, even those who claim to support vague calls for \u201cstricter gun laws,\u201d understand that restricting law-abiding citizens\u2019 gun rights isn\u2019t going to solve the evil, fundamental motivations fueling the criminals who unleash gunfire on other Americans.<\/p>\n<p>As The Federalist\u2019s Elle Reynolds <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/05\/25\/guns-arent-radically-deadlier-than-they-were-50-years-ago-but-our-sick-culture-is\/\">noted<\/a>, even though there\u2019s been a rise in deadly shootings in the last 20 years, \u201cthe firearms that civilians have access to today are not significantly deadlier than the ones that were manufactured for civilian use over half a century ago.\u201d This signals a problem much bigger than lethal weapons and one that certainly won\u2019t be solved by <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/03\/debunking-bidens-tired-gun-rhetoric-and-lies\/\">Biden\u2019s lie-riddled gun rhetoric<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Jordan Boyd is a staff writer at The Federalist and co-producer of The Federalist Radio Hour.
