And so we feel here at this administration \u2014 and other experts as well \u2014 is that we feel that we are in a good position to take on inflation. We\u2019re in a good position to really start really working on lowering prices,\u201d she said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Huh?<\/p>\n<p>Jean-Pierre had this exchange with Fox News\u2019 Peter Doocy during her daily briefing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy do you think it is that 83 percent of people polled by The Wall Street Journal say the economy is \u2018poor\u2019 or \u2018not so good\u2019?\u201d Doocy asked Biden\u2019s spokesman.<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p>\u201cSo, when it comes to consumer confidence \u2014 is what you\u2019re talking about there \u2014 we know that can reflect concern and uncertainty about higher prices.\u00a0 People feel the effect of high prices when they go to the grocery store and they fill up their gans- \u2014 gas tank, which the President understands very personally \u2014 when he was growing up and understanding how \u2014 how when prices elevate even just a bit, how much that can hurt a family, how much that can really affect, you know, someone\u2019s household,\u201d Jean-Pierre said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are in a fundamentally different place compared to when the President took office and compared to this time a year ago,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>That part is too true: The price of gasoline this week officially doubled since Biden took office.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Unbelievably extraordinary lie. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all they can do\u2026<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Xnkx0z6e27\">pic.twitter.com\/Xnkx0z6e27<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dave Rubin (@RubinReport) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RubinReport\/status\/1534281796518658053?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 7, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jean-Pierre continued. \u201cAnd so, you know, during this President \u2014 during his pres- \u2014 this presidency, people felt uncertainty \u2014 uncertain about the economy generally, but they actually felt as good about their personal financial situations as they ever have, according to the Federal Reserve survey, with nearly 80 percent of adults reporting that they are financially comfortable.\u00a0So, that matters as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Doocy followed up, saying: \u201cBut to the point about the \u2014 you\u2019re saying that people feel good about their personal financial situation.\u00a0 High gas prices, people can\u2019t get baby formula, the supply chain is messed up, everything is more expensive.\u00a0 Where\u2019s the good part?\u201d<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p>\u201cSo, the survey that I just read off started in 2013.\u00a0 And that is the first time that we saw numbers like this since 2013.\u00a0 So that does \u2014 no, that does mean something.\u00a0 Just like you gave me 83 percent, I\u2019m giving you \u2014\u201d she said before Doocy cut in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201d And I understand that.\u00a0 Another number then, newer than 2013, 61 percent are saying now, in this Wall Street Journal poll, they are generally pessimistic about people having an opportunity to achieve the American Dream.\u00a0 How\u2019s that going look on a \u2014 on a bumper sticker?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, what I\u2019m \u2014 I guess what I\u2019m trying to say, Peter, is that we understand that people are feeling \u2014 feeling this,\u201d Jean-Pierre said. \u201cThey are feeling the increase of prices, which \u2014 with food, in particular, right now, and gas.\u00a0 That is \u2014 that is something that we understand.\u00a0What we\u2019re trying to say, what I\u2019m trying to say to you is that the economy is in a better place than it has been historically,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are in a historic place in history \u2014 historic place right now, as we have \u2014 as we look at where we are with the economy.\u00a0 Very, very different than where we were a year ago.\u00a0And that is because of what the President has been able to do with a comprehensive plan to get people vaccinated, with a plan to get people back to work,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p><em>Joseph Curl has covered politics for 35 years, including 12 years as White House correspondent for a national newspaper.
