Karen Bass is projected to face Caruso in the November runoff, beating out seven other candidates who campaigned for the office. As of Tuesday night, Bass had 37% of the votes and Caruso received 41%, according to multiple election trackers.<\/p>\n<p>Caruso trailed Bass in a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220607102752\/https:\/\/www.igs.berkeley.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies<\/a> poll co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Times\u00a0released Sunday. CHUN\/POOL\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/27\/murder-rate-increase-2020-police-fbi-report-crime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stark rise in crime<\/a>, including a nationwide increase in the violent crime rate by 5.6% between 2019 to 2020, has made the issue a top priority for voters, Charles Lehman, a fellow at the Manhattan Institute working on policing and public safety, told The Daily Caller News Foundation prior to election day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost voters have grown accustomed to a comparatively low level of violent crime and apparently low level of disorder over the past 20 to 30 years,\u201d Lehman said. \u201cOver the past two years, we\u2019ve seen that status quo degrade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bass, who President Joe Biden previously considered adding to his 2020 presidential ticket, had a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/06\/los-angeles-mayor-karen-bass-rick-caruso-soft-on-crime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">softer platform<\/a> when it came to combating crime. Her <a href=\"https:\/\/karenbass.com\/policies\/crime-prevention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">campaign website<\/a> stated that community organizations and trained experts, as opposed to police, should be given resources to deal with the root causes of crime.<\/p>\n<p>However, the congresswoman has said the phrase \u201cdefund the police\u201d was \u201cprobably one of the worst slogans ever\u201d and that she would transfer 250 Los Angeles police officers out of desk jobs and into patrol, the Los Angeles Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/newsletter\/2022-05-02\/karen-bass-stances-on-law-enforcement-have-landed-her-in-hot-water-with-some-progressives-essential-california\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Chesa Boudin, a former deputy public defender who became the district attorney of San Francisco in 2019, is also expected to lose his <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/17\/chesa-boudin-recall-san-francisco-crime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recall election<\/a> Tuesday night after a tenure of soft-on-crime policies, Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/06\/01\/san-francisco-district-attorney-could-lose-his-job-in-blow-to-national-movement-00036015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
