Edwards originally vetoed the maps passed by the Louisiana Republican-controlled legislature, claiming they were unrepresentative of the interests of black voters who make up almost one-third of the population of Louisiana.<\/p>\n<p>Edwards said the legislature must comply with the court order, the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2011\/12\/26\/federal-judge-for-blacks-voting-rights-include-identifying-democrats-on-ballots\/\">Voting Rights Act<\/a>\u00a0and \u201cbasic fairness and basic math.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2011\/12\/26\/federal-judge-for-blacks-voting-rights-include-identifying-democrats-on-ballots\/\">(RELATED: FACT CHECK: \u2018More Republicans Voted For The Civil Rights Act As A Percentage Than Democrats\u2019)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Edwards\u2019 office referred The Daily Caller News Foundation to the news conference when reached for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Ardoin, the state\u2019s top election official, filed a notice of appeal to overturn the decision with the U.S. Fifth Appeals Circuit Court, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.democracydocket.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/175-2022-06-06-SOS-notice-of-appeal.pdf\">according<\/a> to court documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Department of State\u2019s\u00a0legal team\u00a0and I\u00a0are reviewing the ruling entered by Judge\u00a0Shelly\u00a0Dick this afternoon,\u201d Ardoin said in a statement sent to TheDCNF. \u201cOur office has filed a Notice of Appeal to the Fifth Circuit along with the other named parties in the original action.\u00a0The Louisiana Department of State does not comment on pending litigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If the ruling is not overturned, Louisianan legislators have until June 20, a month before the July 20 qualifying deadline to run in the midterms, to pass a new map with a second majority black district, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/voting-rights-john-bel-edwards-louisiana-baton-rouge-congress-78cae5a254ffa6bcb460139600e60099\">according<\/a> to the Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
