A post shared on Facebook claims these potential donors are risking their lives by doing so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor those who don\u2019t know this already: if you have organ donor on your license or consent to it and you get into an accident, they will not try to save your life. They will sacrifice you for the organs,\u201d reads the post.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous experts have debunked this myth over the years. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/consumer-health\/in-depth\/organ-donation\/art-20047529?fbclid=IwAR1XJPYkAosiyburJ5jl_u32Pw-XuJ61KltclC1vBCWUn-7_ayFdxfOnSS8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Mayo Clinic<\/a> confirms this is purely a rumor on its website, stating, \u201cWhen you go to the hospital for treatment, doctors focus on saving your life \u2014 not somebody else\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pennmedicine.org\/updates\/blogs\/transplant-update\/2019\/march\/myths-about-organ-donation?fbclid=IwAR1Sp00GcoOFfJPOgvxhTwDhRpXjb2A0DZJYoAOvejNUQ9k_JXR-btYqM9Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Penn Medicine<\/a> corroborates this on a section of its website dedicated to myths about organ donation. \u201cHospital staff will do everything they possibly can to save your life,\u201d reads the website.<\/p>\n<p>Penn Medicine goes on to explain the extensive list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.donors1.org\/learn-about-organ-donation\/how-does-organ-and-tissue-donation-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">criteria<\/a> that need to be met before a person can be considered for organ donation. Hospital staff must exhaust all treatment options and confirm the patient has no chance of recovery, and the patient must either be an organ donor or have the donation authorized by their next-of-kin. Further, the patient\u2019s medical history must be evaluated before they can begin being matched with a candidate on the <a href=\"https:\/\/unos.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">United Network for Organ Sharing<\/a> (UNOS) waitlist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly about 2.5 percent of all patients die in a manner that allows for the possibility of a life-saving organ donation,\u201d explains the Gift of Life Donor Program <a href=\"https:\/\/www.donors1.org\/learn-about-organ-donation\/how-does-organ-and-tissue-donation-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2018\/10\/03\/fact-check-maternal-mortality-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Has The Rate Of Maternal Mortality Risen In The US?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cA donor needs to be on a ventilator and die from brain death or circulatory death\u201d in order to be considered for organ donation, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnaz.org\/why-doctors-will-not-let-you-die-if-youre-a-registered-organ-donor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Donor Network of Arizona<\/a>.
