Joe Manchin of West Virginia voiced support for raising the age to purchase semi-automatic weapons, as Congress attempts to craft bipartisan legislation to address mass shootings, CNN reported Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Manchin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/06\/06\/politics\/manchin-gun-purchase-age-ar15s\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a>\u00a0CNN that increasing the age requirement from 18 to 21 would have prevented the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/24\/uvalde-consolidated-independent-school-district-texas-elementary-active-shooter-reports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">massing shooting in Uvalde<\/a> that killed 19 children and two teachers. The shooter, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, legally purchased two AR-15 style rifles in the lead-up to the shooting, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2022\/05\/25\/uvalde-shooter-bought-gun-legally\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to The Texas Tribune. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/26\/mitch-mcconnell-red-flag-laws-bipartisan-negotiations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: McConnell Blesses Gun Control Negotiations Between Dems, GOP)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never thought I had a need for that type of a high-capacity automatic weapon,\u201d Manchin said. \u201cI like to shoot, I like to go out and hunt. I like to go out sports shooting. I do all of that. But I\u2019ve never felt I needed something of that magnitude.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two leading Republican senators in the bipartisan negotiations, Sens. Thom Tillis of North Carolina and John Cornyn of Texas, signaled raising the age restriction was unlikely, CNN reported.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7445104\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7445104\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) speaks to members of the press at the U.S. Capitol June 6, 2022 in Washington, DC.(Photo by Alex Wong\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>A spokesperson for Cornyn directed The Daily Caller News Foundation to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/06\/06\/us\/politics\/gun-control-cornyn-senate-republicans.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interview<\/a> the senator did with The New York Times, where he dismissed the idea an age increase could pass the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has to be incremental,\u201d Cornyn told the outlet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/25\/joe-manchin-wont-support-eliminating-filibuster-pass-gun-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manchin<\/a> pushed back on the idea such a provision was unconstitutional, comparing the idea to age requirements for driver\u2019s licenses, CNN reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy is there a certain age for everything that we do in this society?\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s always been accepted. So I don\u2019t see how this one thing can be any different than other things we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Manchin told CNN he was also open to a ban on rifles similarly styled like the AR-15, but his support would depend on the approach. President Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/02\/joe-biden-gun-control-demands-call-on-congress-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">called for a ban<\/a> on \u201cassault weapons and high capacity magazines\u201d on Thursday, but said a higher age limit should be pursued if such a law was not feasible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is \u2026 not about vilifying gun owners,\u201d Biden said. \u201cIn fact, we believe we should be treating responsible gun owners as an example of how every gun owner should behave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Representatives for Manchin and Tillis, as well as the White House, did not immediately return The Daily Caller News Foundation\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
