They are seeking to stop screenings and distribution of the movie and wish to be rewarded an undisclosed amount of financial compensation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/lawsuit\">lawsuit<\/a> comes on the heels of another record-breaking weekend for \u201cMaverick,\u201d which some industry experts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/top-gun-2-box-office-billion-dollar-club-1235159304\/\">predict<\/a>\u00a0it could reach $1 billion in revenue over time. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/tom-cruise\">Tom Cruise<\/a> action sequel has already raked in $548.6 million worldwide, making it one of the biggest hits of the actor\u2019s career.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit claims \u201cTop Gun: Maverick\u201d is \u201cderivative\u201d of Yonay\u2019s original article and also asserts that Paramount is \u201cthumbing its nose at the statute\u201d that allows the termination of rights after 35 years, per Deadline.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re referring to a May 1983 article in California magazine. Writer Ehud Yonay published \u201cTop Guns\u201d about the pilots and program \u201clocated in a second-floor cubby of offices at the east end of Hangar One at Miramar.\u201d The article was originally optioned and Yonay was named in the credits of the original \u201cTop Gun\u201d movie, the publication notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite the 2022 Sequel clearly having derived from the Story, Paramount consciously failed to secure a new license of film and ancillary rights in the copyrighted Story following the Yonays\u2019 recovery of their U.S. copyright on January 24, 2020,\u201d the filing says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Yonays contend and Paramount denies that the 2022 Sequel does not qualify for the \u2018prior derivative works exception\u2019 under 17 U.S.C. because it was not completed until long after January 24, 2020,\u201d the suit contends.<\/p>\n<p>Shosh and Yuval Yonay claim that they sent notice to Paramount in 2018 informing the studio that they intended to reclaim the copyright in January 2020. \u201cMaverick\u201d began production in May 2018. <\/p>\n<p>The Younays alleged that \u201cMaverick\u201d didn\u2019t finish production until 2021.
