While the Left blames so-called \u201cassault weapons\u201d and pushes for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-claims-gun-control-not-about-taking-away-rights-before-listing-ways-he-wants-to-take-away-rights\">more gun control<\/a>, the Right contends that the decline in religiosity and rise in fatherlessness are motivating factors.<\/p>\n<p>But both sides appear to be missing what could be a significant, yet underreported factor \u2014 the shooter\u2019s marijuana use.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnsnews.com\/blog\/janey-olohan\/ingraham-nyt-silent-after-deleting-uvalde-shooters-pot-rage-article\">Fox News anchor Laura Ingraham<\/a>, The New York Times quoted a friend of the Uvalde shooter who claimed that the 18-year-old smoked marijuana. However, the Times later removed the quote from online editions and when Ingraham asked why, the outlet reportedly did not respond.<\/p>\n<p>During her program, Ingraham dove into a litany of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/article\/S2215-0366(19)30048-3\/fulltext\">studies<\/a> showing an apparent connection between frequent marajuana use and incidences of psychotic disorder. Progressive mouthpieces like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/m7vmm8\/fox-news-weed-texas-school-shooting\">Vice<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/fox-news\/laura-ingraham-blames-marijuana-mass-shootings\">Media Matters<\/a> mocked Ingraham for daring to examine the science. But despite left-wing skepticism, Ingraham may be onto something.<\/p>\n<p>An article published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7084484\/\">International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health<\/a> by Norman Miller \u2014 who Ingraham interviewed on her show \u2014 and two other authors discussed 14 violent incidents in which marijuana use appeared to be a common thread. Beyond marijuana inducing \u201cparanoia\u201d and \u201cpsychosis,\u201d the authors said that \u201cwhen individuals suffering from pre-existing medical conditions use marijuana in an attempt to alleviate their symptoms, ultimately this worsens their conditions over time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the article, the shooter who killed 17 students and staff in 2018 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, started \u201cconsuming marijuana heavily\u201d from a young age \u2014 a habit he confessed in an interview after the shooting.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, toxicology tests on the 2017 shooter who killed 27 people and injured 20 others at a church service in Sutherland Springs, Texas, \u201cdetected marijuana and anti-anxiety drugs\u201d in his system. He began consuming the substance frequently after his expulsion from high school and had a prior arrest for possession of marijuana.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The man who killed nine African-Americans in 2015 at a church in Charleston, South Carolina, started abusing drugs at the age of 12 \u2014 a habit that included smoking marijuana three times per day. He began suffering panic attacks at the age of 16 and told others that his \u201cdaily marijuana usage caused him to be paranoid and hear voices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miller and his fellow authors clarified that their article was not intended as a research study, but mainly existed to \u201cinform the general public about the relationships between marijuana and violence in the general population and in individuals with mental illnesses.\u201d Studies do, however, appear to support their conclusions.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, The Daily Wire\u2019s Ben Johnson detailed the extensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/going-green-the-physical-mental-and-emotional-problems-associated-with-marijuana\">physical, mental, and emotional problems<\/a> associated with marijuana use. Beyond summarizing the progressive push toward legalized weed \u2014 which, by the way, George Soros and other donors bankrolled with an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestranger.com\/green-guide-spring-2019\/2019\/04\/15\/39894305\/the-untold-story-of-marijuana-legalization\">$71.3 million<\/a> between 1996 and 2016 \u2014 Johnson drew from numerous reviews and studies and presented information that should challenge Americans\u2019 widespread perceptions of marijuana use.<\/p>\n<p>One systematic review of existing research published in the peer-reviewed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cureus.com\/articles\/36042-the-association-between-cannabis-use-and-schizophrenia-causative-or-curative-a-systematic-review\">Cureus Journal of Medical Science<\/a> explained that \u201ccannabis use, primarily THC in cannabis, in genetically predisposed or at-risk populations\u201d leads to earlier diagnosis of \u201cpsychosis\u201d and \u201cschizophrenia.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough CBD shows therapeutic potential, there is still more harm from cannabis than benefits, and adolescent cannabis usage should be discouraged at all costs,\u201d the authors cautioned. \u201cWe still need more extensive studies for more detailed data about cannabis and its effects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many medical and psychological research leaders and organizations have been striving to refute the idea that marijuana use helps those experiencing mental health issues. In 2019, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/people-are-using-marijuana-to-treat-anxiety-and-depression-but-the-science-is-murky-11635253201\">American Psychiatric Association<\/a> said in a statement that there is \u201cno current scientific evidence that cannabis is in any way beneficial for the treatment of any psychiatric disorder\u201d and pointed to a \u201cstrong association of cannabis use with the onset of psychiatric disorders.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asam.org\/advocacy\/public-policy-statements\/details\/public-policy-statements\/2020\/10\/10\/cannabis\">American Society of Addiction Medicine<\/a> added that cannabis can be associated with \u201ccognitive decline, impaired educational or occupational attainment, risk of other substance use disorders, and poor quality of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Millions of progressives and conservatives alike want to see an end to violence in schools. Yet power brokers and journalists on the Left clearly do not want to burn \u2014 no pun intended \u2014 one of their sacred cows.<\/p>\n<p>Only two months ago, Democrats in Washington <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/citing-racism-washington-state-bans-the-word-marijuana-from-all-state-laws\">passed a bill<\/a> banning the word \u201cmarijuana\u201d from state laws and documents over concerns regarding its supposed racist implications.
