Kathy Hochul signed into law a series of gun control bills Monday in the wake of the recent mass shooting in Buffalo. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Under the new laws it will be more difficult to purchase firearms and body armor, and people under the age of 21 can no longer buy certain semi-automatic rifles. Additionally, new programs will be created that will track firearms and ammunition as well as suspected criminals, according to the governor\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/news\/governor-hochul-majority-leader-stewart-cousins-and-speaker-heastie-announce-introduction\">website<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI speak to you today as the governor of a state in mourning and the citizen of a nation in crisis \u2026 It just keeps happening. Shots ring out,\u201d Hochul said at a press conference. \u201cFlags come down, and nothing ever changes \u2014 except here in New York.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>The legislation has received backlash by New York Republicans, who argue the laws do not address the real issue facing New Yorkers: violent crime. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/31\/house-democrats-push-list-gun-control-bills-texas-shooting-judiciary-committee\/\"><b>(RELATED: House Democrats To Push List of Gun Control<\/b> <strong>Bills<\/strong>)<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Today I\u2019m proud to sign a comprehensive bill package that, among other reforms:<\/p>\n<p>\u2705 Bans semiautomatic gun sales to people under 21<br \/>\u2705 Bans body armor sales except to those in select professions<br \/>\u2705 Requires microstamping for new semiautomatic guns<br \/>\u2705 Strengthens our Red Flag Law<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Governor Kathy Hochul (@GovKathyHochul) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovKathyHochul\/status\/1533819304717729795?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 6, 2022<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cIn typical Albany fashion, Kathy Hochul is following in the footsteps of her mentor, Andrew Cuomo, and focused on making cheap headlines for her primary instead of making New Yorkers safe,\u201d New York GOP Chairman Nick Langworthy told The Daily Caller News Foundation. \u201cIf Hochul and legislative leaders cared about shooting victims, they would vote today to repeal their disastrous bail laws that has turned our streets over to violent criminals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Other Republicans have argued that the new laws ignore mental <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/new-york-gun-law-proposals\/\"><span>health issues.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis gun control package addresses everything except for the core issue of mental health,\u201d Republican New York State Assembly candidate Anil Beephan told TheDCNF. \u201cAlbany must address rising crime across the state, but the conversation needs to start with mental health, not unconstitutional gun control.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Hochul has also received some criticism from her own party.
