If signed, the bill would become law on Aug. 1.<\/p>\n<p>The bill\u00a0S.B. 388\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.la.gov\/legis\/ViewDocument.aspx?d=1287033\">pdf<\/a>)\u00a0by state Sen. Sharon Hewitt underwent amendments in the House before being approved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.la.gov\/legis\/BillInfo.aspx?s=22RS&#038;b=SB388&#038;sbi=y\">31\u20131<\/a> by the state\u2019s Senate on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The measure makes it a crime for someone to knowingly cause an abortion by \u201cdelivering, dispensing,\u00a0distributing, or providing a pregnant woman with an abortion-inducing drug\u201d if the person is not a doctor licensed under state law to administer the drug to the woman.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t penalize the women who seek abortions.<\/p>\n<p>The bill defines an abortion-inducing drug as \u201cany drug or chemical, or any\u00a0combination of drugs or chemicals, or any other substance when used with the\u00a0intent to cause an abortion, including but not limited to RU-486, the Mifeprex regimen, misoprostol (Cytotec), or methotrexate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It also states that the term \u201cshall not mean a contraceptive, an\u00a0emergency contraceptive, or the use of methotrexate to treat an ectopic\u00a0pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the text of the bill, If a person is found guilty they \u201cshall be imprisoned at hard\u00a0labor\u201d from one to five years, and\/or be fined from $1,000 to $50,000. Higher penalties apply if the drug causes the \u201cdeath or serious bodily injury\u201d of the pregnant woman, and even higher if the woman is under the age of 18.<\/p>\n<p>Louisiana is one of the 13 states in the country with \u201ctrigger\u201d laws that would be enacted if the\u00a0U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v.
