He\u2019s awesome,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1532710931590959104?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1532710931590959104%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.latestly.com%2Fsocially%2Fworld%2Flos-angeles-is-fortunate-to-have-someone-like-rick-caruso-running-for-mayor-hes-latest-tweet-by-elon-musk-3783230.html\">wrote<\/a> on Twitter Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Musk noted that it is \u201crare\u201d for him to \u201cendorse political candidates,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1532715028742385668\">according<\/a> to another Twitter post. \u201cMy political leanings are moderate, so neither fully Republican nor Democrat, which I am confident is the case for most Americans. Executive competence is super underrated in politics\u2014we should care about that a lot more!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caruso, a billionaire who recently changed his party affiliation to Democrat and sits on the board of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation, is running against Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.). Caruso was a Republican until 2019 when he became an independent. (Screenshot via YouTube\/Fox 11 Los Angeles)<\/figure>\n<p>Twelve names are on the ballot for the primary election that ends June 7, though several candidates have dropped out and the race is shaping up as a fight between Caruso and Bass, who was on then-President-elect Joe Biden\u2019s shortlist for vice president. If no candidate clears 50 percent\u2014which is likely with a crowded ballot\u2014the top two finishers advance to a November runoff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of this is going to be how people feel about them as they get to know them better. We don\u2019t know the answer to that,\u201d said veteran Democratic consultant Bill Carrick, who thinks voters are looking for solutions for homelessness and crime, not obsessing with past political affiliations.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent interview, Caruso said that he would hire more police officers if he\u2019s elected and has cited an increase in violent crime across Los Angeles in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to find officers because good officers don\u2019t want to work for LAPD now because they got defunded in 2019 under the current leadership, including the current commission, and they\u2019re demoralized, so why do you want to come work?\u201d Caruso said, according to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/los-angeles-mayors-race-karen-bass-rick-caruso-hiring-more-lapd-officers\/11916407\/\">interview<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m going to turn that around, change the culture, get officers excited about being an officer in L.A. city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Musk made his Twitter post on Friday just hours after the New York Times produced an article on Caruso, which read, \u201cThe Mall Mogul and Former Republican Who Could Lead Los Angeles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know what I\u2019m going to do? I\u2019m going to make L.A. more livable,\u201d Caruso was quoted by the paper as saying. \u201cWe\u2019re going to have cleaner streets and better parks, and we\u2019re going to have lower crime.
