Heard was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/amber-heard-plans-to-appeal-johnny-depp-defamation-case-verdict-spox-says\">awarded<\/a>\u00a0$2 million in damages from statements that were made by Depp attorney Adam Waldman.<\/p>\n<p>Following the jury\u2019s verdict, The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/ive-seen-how-institutions-protect-men-accused-of-abuse-heres-what-we-can-do\/2018\/12\/18\/71fd876a-02ed-11e9-b5df-5d3874f1ac36_story.html\">added<\/a> the following editor\u2019s note to Heard\u2019s op-ed:<\/p>\n<p><em>In 2019, Johnny Depp sued Amber Heard for defamation arising out of this 2018 op-ed. On June 1, 2022, following a trial in Fairfax County, Va. Circuit Court, a jury found Heard liable on three counts for the following statements, which Depp claimed were false and defamatory: (1) \u201cI spoke up against sexual violence \u2014 and faced our culture\u2019s wrath. That has to change.\u201d (2) \u201cThen two years ago, I became a public figure representing domestic abuse, and I felt the full force of our culture\u2019s wrath for women who speak out.\u201d (3) \u201cI had the rare vantage point of seeing, in real time, how institutions protect men accused of abuse.\u201d The jury separately found that Depp, through his lawyer Adam Waldman, defamed Heard in one of three counts in her countersuit.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Legal analyst Emily D. Baker <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/movies\/washington-post-adds-editors-note-amber-heard-op-ed-after-johnny-depp-verdict\/\">said<\/a> it was a \u201csmart move\u201d by the Post to add the editor\u2019s note instead of deleting the op-ed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause this case is so watched and commented on, I think the op-ed is still needed for context. I appreciate that they put up the notice rather than take the op-ed down. And I appreciate that they included, with specificity, exactly the statements that were found to be defamatory,\u201d Baker said. \u201cIt would have been easier to just take it down and say nothing.
