As inflation surges due to higher food and energy prices, people living in West Philadelphia \u2014 a majority-minority neighborhood \u2014 are tightening their budgets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s too high. I don\u2019t know what happened, because the price of everything is too high now,\u201d Mohamed, a West Philadelphia resident and immigrant from French-speaking Africa, told The Daily Wire. Gas prices have especially impacted him due to his daily commute to nearby New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the price for a gallon of regular fuel surged to a national average of $4.76 on Friday, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\">AAA<\/a>. In <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/?state=PA\">Philadelphia County<\/a>, prices are currently $4.93.<\/p>\n<p>Art Walker, a maintenance worker who lives in Delaware but commutes to West Philadelphia, attributes the prices at the pump to oil companies making \u201crecord profits\u201d \u2014 a contention held by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/pelosi-pushes-democratic-bill-that-would-give-biden-power-to-control-gas-prices\">some Democratic lawmakers<\/a>. \u201cWhy in the hell are oil companies gouging us?\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re making more money than they ever made before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In any case, Walker is amending his driving habits as prices rise. \u201cI drive to work and I go home. And anything else in between, I try to do it as I\u2019m going home from work,\u201d he commented. \u201cIt\u2019s just too expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other West Philadelphians are likewise battling the high fuel costs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was using maybe $30 per week. Now I use almost $100,\u201d Iliassou Koukpelerou, who drives a Hyundai Ioniq hybrid, told The Daily Wire. \u201cIt\u2019s too much. I don\u2019t know what they\u2019re going to do about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have to do something to lower the prices, so we can enjoy the way we were before,\u201d he added. \u201cPeople don\u2019t have money in their pockets anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Higher price levels are prompting many Americans to reconsider their spending habits. Despite rising from recession-era lows, consumer confidence \u2014 as measured by the University of Michigan\u2019s benchmark <a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/UMCSENT\">Survey of Consumers<\/a> \u2014 has been falling since the summer of 2021 and is presently near its lowest level in a decade.<\/p>\n<p>Personal consumption expenditures have driven the majority of American economic activity in the modern era, according to data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/DPCERE1Q156NBEA\">U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis<\/a>. Economists therefore look to consumer confidence as a key metric to forecast recessions.<\/p>\n<p>Kahil, a high school student living in West Philadelphia, can see prices impacting his family\u2019s budget.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople around me like my mother \u2014 80% of her life has to do with her driving, so it\u2019s taking a lot more money out of her to get from here to there. It takes away from what we have to do in our everyday lives, because living isn\u2019t cheap,\u201d he said. \u201cThe way prices with everything have gone up, I\u2019ve had to start cutting back on what I spend money on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s only one simple answer.
