On Thursday, the Democrat-led House panel met for an emergency session to discuss a package of measures called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/senate-bill\/2785?s=1&#038;r=2\">Protecting Our Kids Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Republican lawmakers concerns that Democrats are politicizing mass shootings, committee chair Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) emphasized lawmakers must act swiftly.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u201cYou say it\u2019s too soon to take action, that we are politicizing these tragedies to enact new policies,\u201d he stated. \u201cIt has been 23 years since Columbine, 15 years since Virginia Tech, 10 years since Sandy Hook, seven years since Charleston, four years since Parkland and Santa Fe and the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. It has been three years since El Paso. It has been a week since we learned again that gun violence can reach any of our children and grandchildren at anytime.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Republicans on the panel argued it\u2019s too soon. Specifically, Rep. Jim Jordan (@Jim_Jordan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Jim_Jordan\/status\/1532373600140935168?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 2, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, GOP congressman Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) called consideration of gun control legislation at this time \u201cirresponsible.\u201d He also said Democrats \u201chave no idea\u201d if the bill they are pushing would actually be effective.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt is reflexive and it is irresponsible to consider bills while we\u2019re still trying to figure out what happened in some of these circumstances that you suggest animated the need for this hearing,\u201d said the Florida Republican. \u201cThe chairman referenced Uvalde in the first moments of this hearing, but yet we\u2019re still deciphering key elements of the law enforcement response of the physical plant of points of intrusion.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepMattGaetz?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RepMattGaetz<\/a> is spot on. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocrats want to ensure that the government has the power to take your guns away without giving you due process.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bAEZBG42DI\">pic.twitter.com\/bAEZBG42DI<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 House Judiciary GOP (@JudiciaryGOP) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JudiciaryGOP\/status\/1532497316841660416?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 2, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The legislation would raise the aged for buying a semi-automatic rifle from 18 to 21-years-old and allow states to crack down on gun trafficking.
