Do you ever notice the lines? I certainly do. It seems like there\u2019s always one at the drive-thru, right? I travel a lot, and whenever I go to the food court at the Philadelphia airport, there\u2019s always a line for the place, even when most of the other stands offering good food don\u2019t have lines.<\/p>\n<p>So what\u2019s so great about Chick-fil-A?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it\u2019s the nuggets. Or the sauces. Or the company\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/article\/311452\">secret menu<\/a>.\u201d It may also be how difficult it is to actually own a Chick-fil-A franchise, which motivates those who are lucky enough to start one to make it as great as possible. All of those are good reasons. But there\u2019s another, more interesting reason: It\u2019s the company\u2019s employee culture, which extends to its treatment of its customers.<\/p>\n<p>Chick-fil-A is closed on Sundays because it\u2019s founder\u2014a religious (and sometimes controversial) man\u2014was committed to the Sabbath. The company also provides generous benefits (since 1973, Chick-fil-A has given more than <a href=\"https:\/\/thechickenwire.chick-fil-a.com\/Inside-Chick-fil-A\/The-Key-is-Caring-Truett-Cathys-Heart-for-Employees\">$35 million<\/a> in college scholarships to its employees) and is frequently listed as one of the best places to work in the fast-food industry.<\/p>\n<p>Employees are also extremely respectful to their customers. In a 2016 study by research firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qsrmagazine.com\/content\/drive-thru-2016-service-attributes?sort=none_of_the_above&#038;dir=asc\">QSR<\/a>, Chick-fil-A\u2019s employees overwhelming said \u201cplease\u201d and \u201cthank you\u201d at a higher rate than their competitors.<\/p>\n<p>But one thing those employees don\u2019t say: You\u2019re welcome. Because it\u2019s simply more polite, and it shows gratitude to the customer.<\/p>\n<p>The practice, according to a report from Nathaniel Meyersohn on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/04\/09\/business\/chick-fil-a-my-pleasure\/index.html\">CNN,<\/a> began more than 20 years ago when the company\u2019s founder, Truett Cathy, stayed at a Ritz-Carlton and was struck by how the employees of the iconic hotel chain always responded to each request with, \u201cMy pleasure.\u201d So he asked his own employees to start doing so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt dawned on me that this could be a service signature for us, almost like two pickles on a sandwich,\u201d Cathy\u2019s son, Dan, said in Meyersohn\u2019s piece.<\/p>\n<p>Noted author and behaviorist Adam Grant admitted he also feels uncomfortable with the phrase, \u201cYou\u2019re welcome.\u201d He feels that the saying, which evolved over the past century and originally meant, \u201cYou are welcome to my help,\u201d implies that the customer is somewhat in debt to the person performing the service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI realized the problem was the subtle appeal to reciprocity,\u201d Grant writes in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/give-and-take\/201311\/why-you-should-stop-saying-youre-welcome\">Psychology Today<\/a>. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing wrong with trading favors or asking others to repay the help you\u2019ve given, but when I chose to help people, I wanted to do it without strings attached. Because without its customers, there would be no Chick-fil-A.
