Biden, however, claims that he wasn\u2019t aware of any issues with the formula supply chain until April when the national out-of-stock rate for formula hit <a href=\"https:\/\/datasembly.com\/news\/out-of-stock-rate-in-april-2022-copy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">30 percent.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think anyone anticipated the impact of the shutdown of one facility, in, uh, the Abbott facility,\u201d the Democrat said. \u201cOnce we learned of the extent of it and how broad it was, we kicked everything into gear and I think we are on the way to be able to completely solve the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"XgfHddC1AypETes7k44Jo2BnaPfKrVWllqccDXHPAiIK9ihR35sF1Mm8nN0Qv5jUwSWo\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Reporter: Why didn&#8217;t you move quicker on the baby formula shortage?<\/p>\n<p>Biden: &#8220;I don&#8217;t think anyone anticipated the impact of the shutdown of Abbott facility.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Reporter: &#8220;Didn&#8217;t the CEOs just tell you they understood it would have a very big impact?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Biden:&#8221;They did but I didn&#8217;t&#8221; Karine Jean-Pierre: &#8220;I don&#8217;t have the timeline on that.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vyCCEbP9Jx\">pic.twitter.com\/vyCCEbP9Jx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CBS News (@CBSNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBSNews\/status\/1532406808484126720?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 2, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>That\u2019s a drastic change in messaging from <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/qROLCLjw0cM?t=1104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">early May<\/a> when Jean-Pierre claimed the shortage was a \u201ctop priority\u201d for the White House.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an urgent issue that the FDA and White House are working 24\/7 to address,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>That was, of course, shortly before she <a href=\"https:\/\/townhall.com\/tipsheet\/katiepavlich\/2022\/05\/11\/bidens-incoming-press-secretary-laughs-about-baby-formula-shortage-n2607079\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">laughed<\/a> in response to questions about \u201cwho is running point on the formula issue at the White House?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the White House, I don\u2019t know,\u201d Jean-Pierre said through laughter on May 11. \u201cI can find out for you and get you a person who is running point.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It was also shortly before outgoing Press Secretary Jen Psaki blamed formula problems on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SmithInAmerica\/status\/1525172316380008448?s=20&#038;t=ykmBUta_-gJhKUCkItdHuQ\">retailers, stockers<\/a>, and alleged baby formula hoarders, while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Cdq3VBnuDLS\/?utm_source=ig_embed&#038;ig_rid=fe3192f7-c515-4616-ae6b-bb481b83a3f1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">White House Instagram<\/a> page advised parents to \u201cuse a different brand of formula\u201d and \u201ccall your OB\/GYN or pediatrician\u201d to request supplements.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"PgwkL2ND3TjhWF1psJ5EAbyt8RuKCr94m6noBIiq0zOZxUlvc7GMafXVYS\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Psaki on baby formula shortage: &#8220;What we are seeing which is an enormous problem is hoarding \u2026 &#038; people hoarding because they are trying to profit off of fearful parents.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qtxQtnk4ng\">pic.twitter.com\/qtxQtnk4ng<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Post Millennial (@TPostMillennial) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TPostMillennial\/status\/1524841488085045249?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 12, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The Biden administration eventually tried to soothe Americans\u2019 formula panic by invoking the Defense Production Act, striking a reopening deal with the formula plant that had been shut down, and flying in the product from Europe.
