Steve Cohen called for a ban on \u201cassault weapons\u201d during a Thursday congressional hearing on gun control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Second Amendment, like the first, is not absolute,\u201d Cohen said during the House Judiciary Committee hearing. \u201cThe First Amendment, you cannot defame people. You cannot go into a theater and holler fire.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/31\/cnn-invents-definition-assault-rifle-ar-15\/\">(RELATED: CNN Just Invents The Definition Of An Assault Rifle)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cohen\u2019s remarks came in the wake of a deadly <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/24\/uvalde-consolidated-independent-school-district-texas-elementary-active-shooter-reports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mass shooting<\/a> in Uvalde, Texas, at Robb Elementary School that killed 19 students and two teachers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are limits to the Second Amendment,\u201d Cohen said. \u201cAssault weapons are one of those limits we had for 10 years and during that time we had less mass killings in this country, and we should have it again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The \u201cProtect Our Kids Act,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/7910\/text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">introduced<\/a> Tuesday, includes a proposal to raise the minimum age to buy a firearm to 21, bans on supposed \u201cghost guns,\u201d a ban on bump stocks, and a ban on \u201clarge-capacity magazines.\u201d Gun-control legislation has stalled in the Senate due to the inability to garner the 60 votes necessary to break a filibuster, with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/25\/lawmakers-uvalde-school-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reversing course<\/a> on forcing a vote in the Senate last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese guns fire in the same manner as any other semi-automatic firearm (one shot per trigger pull \u2013 no spray firing), they shoot the same ammunition as other guns of the same caliber and are no more powerful,\u201d the National Shooting Sports Foundation said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.nssf.org\/share\/factsheets\/PDF\/So_Called_Assault_Weapons.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fact sheet<\/a>. \u201cWhat differentiates a so-called \u2018assault weapon\u2019 from other guns is cosmetic; for example, the type of stock on the gun, which makes the conventionally operating firearm look more like a military firearm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 18-year-old shooter, Salvadore Ramos, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/25\/texas-school-shooters-mother-speaks-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">legally bought<\/a> two AR-15 rifles legally, the Daily Mail reported.<\/p>\n<p>Cohen\u2019s office did not respond to a request for comment from The Daily Caller News Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
