Avenatti argued in closing arguments that he was acting in good faith, believing he was owed the money and never thinking it was wrong to take it,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnewyork.com\/news\/local\/crime-and-courts\/michael-avenatti-gets-4-years-in-prison-for-stealing-from-porn-star-stormy-daniels\/3716908\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> NBC-4 New York.<\/p>\n<p>The disgraced lawyer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/michael-avenatti-sentenced-stormy-daniels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spoke<\/a> on his behalf at the sentencing, admitting his \u201cpoor judgment\u201d in the matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will forever be branded \u2018disgraced lawyer\u2019 and worse,\u201d he acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p>Avenatti had requested the opportunity to be sentenced remotely prior to the announcement on Thursday. U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman denied the request.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the Court\u2019s view, the gravity and significance of the sentencing proceeding would be ill served by a remote proceeding,\u201d Furman wrote.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Here&#8217;s Judge Furman&#8217;s full order denying Avenatti&#8217;s second request to be sentenced via video in the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StormyDaniels?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@StormyDaniels<\/a> case. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the Court\u2019s view, the gravity and significance of the sentencing proceeding would be ill served by a remote proceeding.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Hde3rrvIlL\">pic.twitter.com\/Hde3rrvIlL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Meghann Cuniff (@meghanncuniff) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/meghanncuniff\/status\/1524437665193480193?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 11, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The sentencing is scheduled to run concurrently with Avenatti\u2019s sentencing in a separate Nike case that will include two and a half years to be served after his first sentence is complete.<\/p>\n<p>In February, The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-michael-avenatti-convicted-of-swindling-stormy-daniels-out-of-300000-book-advance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that prosecutors said Avenatti helped negotiate an $800,000 book advance for Daniels, then instructed the porn star\u2019s literary agent to wire the first two installments of the advance to an account Avenatti controlled. Avenatti took the payments, which totaled just under $300,000, without Daniels\u2019 knowledge, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/02\/04\/politics\/michael-avenatti\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Avenatti previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/michael-avenatti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">became famous<\/a> for his role as the attorney for Daniels, who claimed she had a one-night sexual affair with Trump in 2006 and was paid $130,000 in October 2016 by Trump\u2019s personal attorney Michael Cohen to sign a nondisclosure agreement about the alleged affair.<\/p>\n<p>The following year, Avenatti and Daniels became locked in a legal battle with Cohen over the validity of the agreement. When Cohen\u2019s office, home, and hotel room were raided by the FBI in 2018, Daniels agreed to work with authorities, while Avenatti made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/30712\/porn-star-lawyer-interviewed-147-times-just-10-joseph-curl\">more than a hundred<\/a>\u00a0appearances on various media outlets, in particular CNN and MSNBC, making allegations against Cohen and Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Avenatti\u2019s case with Nike led to his sentencing to 30 months in jail after he was convicted on three counts of attempting to extort Nike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Avenatti\u2019s conduct was outrageous. He hijacked his client\u2019s claims, and he used those claims to further his own agenda \u2014 which was to extort millions of dollars from Nike to enrich himself,\u201d Judge Paul Gardephe said at the sentencing hearing. \u201cMr. Avenatti had become drunk on the power of his platform, or what he perceived the power of his platform to be.
