Gavin Newsom is demanding a minimum wage increase as the U.S. economy suffers from record inflation.<\/p>\n<p>The 500-page <a href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/system\/files\/media\/ab3121-reparations-interim-report-2022.pdf\">report<\/a> issued by the California Reparations Task Force alleges there is and has been\u00a0\u201cracial bias\u201d against minorities statewide. This \u201chindered opportunity,\u201d it says, can be partially addressed by mandating salary increases for Californians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaise the minimum wage and require scaling-up of the minimum wage for more experienced workers, require provision of health benefits and paid time off, and provide other missing protections for workers in food and hospitality services, agricultural, food processing, and domestic worker industries,\u201d the report states.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/23\/californians-may-face-mandatory-statewide-water-restrictions-newsom-impatient\/\">Newsom<\/a> greenlit <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/california-passes-landmark-law-study-proposals-reparations\/story?id=73362111\">legislation<\/a> in 2020 establishing a nine-member task force to \u201cinform Californians about slavery and explore ways the state might provide reparations.\u201d The report is billed as the first of its kind by a state government to \u201cstudy slavery, its effects throughout American history, and the compounding harms that the United States and Californian governments have inflicted upon African Americans,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/news\/press-releases\/california-reparations-task-force-releases-interim-report-detailing-harms\">according<\/a> to a press release.<\/p>\n<p>The call for a minimum wage increase and other regulations comes after the United States <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/31\/joe-biden-inflation-trafalgar-russia-ukraine-spending\/\">recorded<\/a> a 41-year high inflation rate of 8.4% in March. Gas prices are currently clocking in at an average gallon cost of roughly $4.71, AAA <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\">reported<\/a> Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Employment in the private sector rose by only 128,000 in May, falling short of the 299,000 estimate by Dow Jones, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/06\/02\/adp-jobs-report-may-2022.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNBC<\/a> reported.\u00a0Small businesses were the hardest hit in May, as companies with 50 or fewer employees reduced staff by 91,000.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7442050\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7442050\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA \u2013 FEBRUARY 09: California Gov. (Photo by Justin Sullivan\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>A minimum wage hike would be impractical, especially right now, Hillsdale College economics professor Gary Wolfram told The Daily Caller News Foundation. Poorer people would suffer the consequences, as government regulations tighten on businesses, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe person with an accounting degree from the University of California at Berkeley is not going to be affected by an increase in the minimum wage,\u201d said Wolfram. \u201cWho is going to lose their job or won\u2019t be hired while they\u2019re going out into the labor force?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s those people who are at the bottom of the productivity, which tend to be people who are low skilled and who have a poor educational background,\u201d he also said, explaining that such \u201cintervention in the economy\u201d has \u201cunintended consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The California Reparations Task Force issued its report to the state\u2019s legislature, while a final document will be sent before July 2023.
