Support reached the majority level in 2011, then 60% one month before the Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage in 2015, and then escalated to 70% in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRising national support for legal same-sex marriage reflects steady increases among most subgroups of the population, even those who have traditionally been the most resistant to gay marriage,\u201d Gallup said in a release. \u201cAdults aged 65 and older, for example,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/191645\/americans-support-gay-marriage-remains-high.aspx\">became mostly supportive in 2016<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 as did\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/210566\/support-gay-marriage-edges-new-high.aspx\">Protestants in 2017<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/350486\/record-high-support-same-sex-marriage.aspx\">Republicans in 2021<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Americans who rarely or never go to church have been the most supportive of same-sex marriage since the issue first entered the national discussion, Gallup noted.<\/p>\n<p>Those who attend church weekly are \u201cthe final holdouts of opposition,\u201d according to Gallup: 58% of Americans who report that they attend church weekly oppose same-sex marriage, while 40% of that group are in favor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Gallup\u2019s trend on support for legal same-sex marriage inches ever upward, the question is when it will reach its ceiling,\u201d Gallup writer Justin McCarthy notes. \u201cWhile support has typically increased by small percentages on an annual basis \u2014 often within the margin of error \u2014 cumulatively, the increases have produced a transformation in U.S. attitudes on an issue Americans once vehemently opposed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy drew on the claims of pro-abortion activists who insist that Supreme Court justices may \u201cclear a path for the conservative-leaning court to also overturn Obergefell,\u201d\u00a0drawing on the leaked draft opinion suggesting the likely overturning of <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The draft document, which is not final, says\u00a0<em>Roe v.
