REUTERS\/Leah Millis<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/02\/task-force-slavery-reparations-california-first-meeting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">task force<\/a> gave several <a href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/system\/files\/media\/ab3121-interim-report-preliminary-recommendations-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">preliminary recommendations<\/a>, urging the state to \u201cend legal slavery\u201d by scrapping language from the state constitution that \u201cpermits involuntary servitude as punishment for crime,\u201d prohibiting the use of free prison labor, making sure incarcerated individuals have access to mental health and substance treatment and allow incarcerated people the right to vote.<\/p>\n<p>The task force also recommended that the state \u201ccreate forms of acknowledgement and apology for acts of political disenfranchisement\u201d and \u201cimplement a detailed program of reparations for African Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The task force was created in 2020 and is composed of nine members appointed by Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom and other legislative leaders. The task force members include descendants of slaves.
