The agency has nixed a total of $25 billion in student debt since January 2021 through loan relief.<\/p>\n<p>The move also occurs as President Joe Biden weighs a broader cancellation of student debt. Last week, administration officials were leaning toward $10,000 per borrower who earns less than $150,000, according to a report from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/us-policy\/2022\/05\/27\/biden-student-debt-borrower\/\">The Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic lawmakers, however, have pressured Biden to forgive up to $50,000 per borrower. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has argued that \u201call President Biden has to do is flick his pen\u201d in order to erase the debt. However, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/this-cpac-footage-is-nuts-progressives-blast-pelosi-for-saying-student-debt-forgiveness-is-a-bad-idea\">questioned the premise<\/a> that student loan forgiveness is a beneficial policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuppose,\u201d she said in response to Schumer\u2019s argument, \u201cyour child at this time does not want to go to college, but you\u2019re paying taxes to forgive someone else\u2019s obligation. You may not be happy about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) President Derrick Johnson contended last week that Biden\u2019s possible $10,000 plan would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bidens-plan-to-cancel-10000-in-student-debt-would-not-be-enough-for-black-borrowers-naacp-chief-says\">not be enough<\/a> for black borrowers, asserting that the solution would merely be \u201cpouring a bucket of ice water on a forest fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlack Americans are the only people who have student debt higher than their median annual income,\u201d he said, noting that the average white family holds ten times more wealth than the typical black family. \u201c$10,000 in cancelation would not place their student debt lower than their annual income.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other data show that student loan cancellation disproportionately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/six-groups-who-lose-if-joe-biden-forgives-college-loans\">benefits wealthy Americans<\/a>. The 40% of households earning the most income hold 60% of student loan debt, according to a study from the Brookings Institution. Most people who would gain from debt cancellation make more than $74,000.<\/p>\n<p>President Biden\u2019s approval rating has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-approval-plunged-whopping-18-points-among-young-voters-in-last-12-months-harvard-poll\">dropped 18% among young Americans<\/a> between the spring of 2021 and the spring of 2022, according to the most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/iop.harvard.edu\/youth-poll\/spring-2022-harvard-youth-poll\">Harvard Youth Poll<\/a>, in which 85% of respondents expressed approval of government action on student loans in some form.<\/p>\n<p>The polled said that Young Democrats were 5% less likely to vote in comparison to the spring of 2018.
