But due to Virginia law, Depp was actually awarded millions less.<\/p>\n<p>The jury found that Heard defamed Depp in an op-ed about domestic violence, published at The Washington Post in 2018. The \u201cAquaman\u201d actress was awarded $2 million over statements Depp lawyer Adam Waldman wrote about Heard allegedly intentionally messing up her apartment to stage a hoax against Depp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReason why jury awarded $5M in punitive damages to <a class=\"css-4rbku5 css-18t94o4 css-901oao css-16my406 r-1cvl2hr r-1loqt21 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\" role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/JohnnyDepp?src=hashtag_click\">#JohnnyDepp<\/a> but in reality he\u2019ll get much less: Virginia law caps punitive damages at $350K regardless of the verdict, but the jury doesn\u2019t get told about the limit ahead of time,\u201d Court TV\u2019s Julia Jenae explained Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jenae also linked to the Virginia law about <a href=\"https:\/\/law.lis.virginia.gov\/vacode\/title8.01\/chapter3\/section8.01-38.1\/\">limitation<\/a> on recovery of punitive damages, which reads as follows:<\/p>\n<p><em>In any action accru\u200b\u200bing on or after July 1, 1988, including an action for medical malpractice under Chapter 21.1 (\u00a7 <a href=\"http:\/\/law.lis.virginia.gov\/vacode\/8.01-581.1\/\">8.01-581.1<\/a> et seq.), the total amount awarded for punitive damages against all defendants found to be liable shall be determined by the trier of fact. In no event shall the total amount awarded for punitive damages exceed $350,000. The jury shall not be advised of the limitation prescribed by this section. And if you offset that number to include Heard\u2019s $2 million, the actor nets about $8.3 million.<\/p>\n<p data-table=\"CoV\" data-field=\"body\">Notably, Depp and his legal team repeatedly emphasized to the court that the actor filed the suit to clear his name, not necessarily for the money. And the verdict certainly did that, finding Heard culpable of defaming Depp by way of her damning Washington Post op-ed about domestic violence.<\/p>\n<p data-table=\"CoV\" data-field=\"body\">Depp acknowledged this much in a statement following the verdict.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix years later, the jury gave me my life back,\u201d the \u201cPirates of the Caribbean\u201d star said in a statement to Law&#038;Crime Network. \u201cI am truly humbled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Depp went on to say his life was turned upside-down when Heard launched her accusations against him, fingering the media for perpetuating the lies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFalse, very serious and criminal allegations were levied at me via the media, which triggered an endless barrage of hateful content, although no charges were ever brought against me,\u201d he wrote. \u201cIt had already traveled around the world twice within a nanosecond and it had a seismic impact on my life and my career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Depp added that he pursued the case in the first place to \u201creveal the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"und\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/JohnnyDepp?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#JohnnyDepp<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/plxIXGwxCL\">pic.twitter.com\/plxIXGwxCL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Chanley Sh\u00e1 Painter (@ChanleyCourtTV) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChanleyCourtTV\/status\/1532093625760419842?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 1, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Heard, on the other hand, seemed to double-down on her allegations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe disappointment I feel today is beyond words,\u201d the actress wrote in a statement, reacting to the verdict. \u201cI\u2019m heartbroken that the mounting of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women,\u201d Heard continued. \u201cIt is a setback. It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated.
