The total cost of Los Angeles County lifeguards\u2019 pay and benefits came to more than $57 million, and the highest-earning L.A. lifeguard, Daniel Douglas, made $510,283.00 including benefits.<\/p>\n<p>An OpenTheBooks.com <a href=\"https:\/\/openthebooks.substack.com\/p\/top-paid-la-lifeguards-earned-up?s=w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">investigation<\/a> published Monday using Freedom of Information Act requests and <a href=\"https:\/\/transparentcalifornia.com\/salaries\/search\/?a=los-angeles-county&#038;q=LIFEGUARD&#038;y=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">information<\/a> from Transparent California uncovered striking statistics about L.A. lifeguards\u2019 salaries. According to the article, written by OpenTheBooks.com CEO Adam Andrzejewski, \u201cAfter 30 years of service, LA lifeguards can retire as young as 55 on 79-percent of their pay.\u201d The lifeguard division operates <a href=\"https:\/\/fire.lacounty.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Org-Chart-LACoFD-Eff-Apr-1-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">under<\/a> the County of Los Angeles Fire department, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/supportlacountyfire.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">partly<\/a> taxpayer-funded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Los Angeles County Fire Department had approximately 166 full-time Ocean Lifeguards and 600 seasonal recurrent Ocean Lifeguards,\u201d a spokesperson from the county said in a statement to OpenTheBooks.com.<\/p>\n<p>Lifeguards\u2019 responsibilities sometimes take them beyond the water\u2019s edge. \u201cDuring large-scale brush fires, our lifeguards take on additional responsibilities to work on specialized incident management teams to support firefighters all over the state,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the county\u2019s handling of Covid-19, lifeguards assumed very different roles. According to Andrzejewski\u2019s article, \u201cIn some cases, lifeguards acted as police, enforcing stay-at-home orders, keeping people off the beaches and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2020-04-03\/paddle-boarder-arrested-in-malibu-after-flouting-coronavirus-closures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">out of the water<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beginning in January 2021, the Lifeguard Division <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IZPEqOnOLLQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">provided<\/a> logistical support at the county\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynews.com\/2021\/01\/15\/la-county-will-open-five-large-scale-coronavirus-vaccination-sites-next-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">five major Covid-19 vaccine distribution sites<\/a> as part of the county\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/publichealth.lacounty.gov\/media\/Coronavirus\/vaccine\/vaccine-dashboard.htm\">unsuccessful<\/a> push to get 10 million people vaccinated. \u201cThe Lifeguard Division provided personnel, logistics, and incident management qualifications to support Covid-19 Testing and Covid-19 vaccinations all over the County of Los Angeles,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/quickfacts\/losangelescountycalifornia\">According to the U.S. Census Bureau<\/a>, per capita income in Los Angeles County is $35,685, while the national average salary for lifeguards is even lower <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ziprecruiter.com\/Salaries\/Lifeguard-Salary\">according to ZipRecruiter<\/a> at $24,067.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Olivia Hajicek is an intern at The Federalist and a junior at Hillsdale College studying history and journalism.
