Greg Abbott said he felt <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wR_9Ds_KgU4?t=219\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cmisled\u201d<\/a> and \u201clivid\u201d after hearing that a poor police response significantly contributed to the delay in action against the shooter. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.in\/international\/news\/texas-lt-gov-dan-patrick-says-officials-were-not-told-the-truth-about-uvalde-shooting-timeline\/articleshow\/91861038.cms\">lamented<\/a> that \u201cNo one mentioned the fact that there was this 45-minute to an hour hold by the chief of the police of the school district while there were still shots being fired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here are eight lies Texas officials told about the Uvalde shooting that should get them immediately fired. <\/p>\n<h2>1. A School Resource Officer \u2018Engaged\u2019 the Suspect<\/h2>\n<p>Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Director Steve McCraw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2022\/05\/26\/uvalde-school-shooting-police-response\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">originally said<\/a> a school resource officer \u201cengaged\u201d the suspect before he entered the school. <\/p>\n<p>At one point, McCraw switched tracks and said the officer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2022\/05\/27\/uvalde-school-shooting-police-errors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cwas not on campus\u201d<\/a> at the time of the shooting. <\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, officials were reported saying the school officer simply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedenverchannel.com\/news\/national\/official-details-how-gunman-entered-texas-classroom-killing-19-students-2-teachers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cconfronted\u201d<\/a> the shooter instead of actively engaging him. <\/p>\n<p>Texas DPS was forced to walk back both accounts a couple of days later when word got out that the school resource officer completely failed to notice the shooter when he drove past the suspect who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/texas-school-shooting-timeline-robb-elementary-school-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201chunkered down\u201d<\/a> behind a vehicle. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The shooter] walked in unobstructed initially,\u201d Texas DPS Regional Director Victor Escalon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/05\/26\/us\/uvalde-texas-elementary-school-shooting-thursday\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eventually admitted<\/a>. \u201cSo from the grandmother\u2019s house, to the [ditch], to the school, into the school, he was not confronted by anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>2. The Shooter Was Outside the School for 12 Minutes Before Entering<\/h2>\n<p>Escalon said last week that the shooter lingered outside of Robb for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/uvalde-residents-voice-frustration-over-shooting-response-11653588161?no_redirect=true&#038;mod=mhp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">12 minutes<\/a> after crashing his car into a nearby ditch. Days later, McCraw said the gun-wielding teen was inside the school within <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/06\/01\/uvalde-shooting-details-retracted\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">five minutes<\/a> of wrecking. <\/p>\n<h2>3. The Door the Shooter Entered Through Was Left Propped Open by a Teacher<\/h2>\n<p>Original reports from the shooting scene at Robb Elementary suggested that a teacher left a back door at the school propped open with a rock which is how the shooter entered the building. <\/p>\n<p>McCraw volunteered the information during his Friday press conference and claimed that DPS obtained video evidence to support this theory. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know from video evidence, at 11:27 the exterior door suspected for what the \u2014 where we knew the shooter entered, Ramos \u2014 was propped open by a teacher,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/news\/hey-from-the-benefit-of-hindsight-watch-full-video-and-transcript-of-stunning-uvalde-press-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/uvalde-school-shooting-texas-a55b3ccc5a32dce916e7d0a10d7c546e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Recent statements from Texas state police,<\/a>\u00a0however, suggest that the teacher accused of neglecting the back door went back to close it after seeing Ramos. The door, however, did not automatically lock properly. The unnamed teacher\u2019s lawyer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expressnews.com\/news\/local\/article\/Uvalde-teacher-open-door-shooter-17209972.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">also denies<\/a> that his client left the back door open.<\/p>\n<p>In a complete contradiction of DPS\u2019s original claim, some outlets are even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/uvalde-teacher-counters-police-narrative-over-open-door-used-shooter-1711879\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reporting <\/a>that \u201csecurity footage obtained from the area has backed up the claim that the teacher closed the door at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>4. The Gunman Was Wearing Body Armor<\/h2>\n<p>DPS spokesman Sgt. Erick Estrada <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2022\/05\/26\/uvalde-shooting-official-accounts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a> shortly after the shooting that the suspect carried \u201ca rifle and [had] body armor on.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Another DPS spokesman, Lt. Christopher Olivarez, later claimed that the gunman was wearing a vest designed to carry extra ammo but did not have any plates on him.<\/p>\n<h2>5. Officers Quickly Engaged The Shooter<\/h2>\n<p>McCraw originally said that the first law enforcement officers who arrived at the school \u201cdid engage\u201d the shooter \u201cimmediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bottom line is law enforcement was there,\u201d McCraw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/05\/26\/uvalde-texas-shooting-police-school\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> the day after the shooting. \u201cThey did engage immediately. They did contain [the gunman] in the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Uvalde\u00a0Police Chief Daniel Rodriguez also claimed that his\u00a0officers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/-done-witnesses-question-law-enforcement-response-texas-school-shootin-rcna30609\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cresponded within minutes.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until three days after the tragedy that McCraw <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/05\/27\/in-uvalde-a-picture-is-emerging-of-extreme-cowardice-and-incompetence-among-local-police\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">admitted<\/a> local law enforcement shied away from helping students and staff after taking fire from the suspect. McCraw claimed that officers misclassified the suspect as a barricaded shooter and that \u201cthere were no kids at risk.\u201d Officers reportedly stood outside of the school and then outside of the classroom for nearly an hour while waiting for a Border Patrol tactical team to show up at the scene where students were repeatedly calling 911 for help. <\/p>\n<p>By the time BORTAC arrived and used a janitor key to enter the afflicted fourth-grade classroom, the shooter had been on school property for more than an hour. <\/p>\n<h2>6. Officers Weren\u2019t Well Enough Equipped<\/h2>\n<p>Oliverez claimed that local law enforcement officers retreated because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2022\/05\/27\/uvalde-shooting-police-gunman-shot-olivarez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cthey could\u2019ve been shot\u201d<\/a> and wanted to wait for specialized backup. Records, however, show that Chief Pete Arredondo of Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District, who ordered officers to stay outside of the classroom where the gunman was, was trained to respond in active shooter situations. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/uvalde-texas-school-shooting-active-shooter-training-pete-arredondo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Records show<\/a> Arredondo recently completed eight hours of active shooter training in December of 2021. He also went through eight hours of the same training in 2020 and 16 hours of \u201cTerrorism Response Tactics \u2013 Active Shooter\u201d in 2019.<\/p>\n<h2>7. CISD Chief Is Or Is Not Responding to Investigators<\/h2>\n<p>DPS claimed on Tuesday that Arredondo has not responded to investigators over his role in delaying a law enforcement response to the Robb shooting. <\/p>\n<p>\u201dThe Uvalde Police Department and Uvalde [school district] Police have been cooperating with investigators,\u201d DPS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/uvalde-texas-school-shooting-police-chief-peter-arredondo-investigators\/\">said<\/a> in a statement. \u201cThe chief of the Uvalde [school district] Police provided an initial interview but has not responded to a request for a follow-up interview with the Texas Rangers that was made two days ago.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On the same day, multiple law enforcement sources told ABC News that \u201cThe Uvalde Police Department and the Uvalde Independent School District police force are no longer cooperating with the Texas Department of Public Safety\u2019s investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arredondo, however, told CNN on Wednesday that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Sarah_Boxer\/status\/1531985194244534272\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cI\u2019ve been on the phone with them every day.\u201d <\/a><\/p>\n<h2>8. Local Law Enforcement Didn\u2019t Mislead Anyone<\/h2>\n<p>Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin denied that local law enforcement misled the public about their actions during the school shooting. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLocal law enforcement has not made any public comments about the specifics of the investigation into the incident or [misled] anyone,\u201d McLaughlin <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/uvalde-texas-police-cooperating-state-215818004.html\">said<\/a>. \u201cStatements by Lt. Governor Dan Patrick that he was \u2018not told the truth\u2019 are not true. All statements and comments made to date about the ongoing investigation are being handled by DPS\/Texas Rangers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Local law enforcement may not have directly said much about the Uvalde shooting, but officers failed to clarify any of the blatant misinformation parroted by DPS, allowing the public to be misled for days.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Jordan Boyd is a staff writer at The Federalist and co-producer of The Federalist Radio Hour.
