It was used to kill hopes for freedom. In Kentucky, it was used to kill three of my uncles,\u201d Booker tweeted along with the video ad. \u201cIn this historic election, the choice is clear. Rand Paul may want to divide us, but hate won\u2019t win this time. It\u2019s time to move forward, together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Lynching is a tool of terror. The very person who compared expanded health care to slavery. The person who said he would have opposed the Civil Rights Act. The person who single-handedly blocked an anti-lynching act from being federal law. The choice couldn\u2019t be clearer: do we move forward together? Or do we let politicians like Rand Paul forever hold us back and drive us apart?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taking off the noose, Booker says, \u201cIn November, we will choose healing. We will choose Kentucky.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But as USA Today <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2022\/06\/01\/rand-paul-charles-booker-noose-campaign-ad\/7466312001\/?utm_campaign=snd-autopilot\">pointed out<\/a>, Booker left out the fact that Paul had opposed the initial bill because he argued that Congress needed more time to get it right \u2014 and had later co-sponsored a bipartisan anti-lynching bill that passed in March. \u201cThe Senate\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2022\/03\/08\/emmett-till-antilynching-act-passes-senate\/9427711002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\">unanimously voted<\/a> this\u00a0March to pass the updated\u00a0Emmett Till Antilynching Act,\u00a0which <a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2022\/03\/29\/who-is-emmett-till-civil-rights\/7203642001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\">is now law<\/a>,\u201d the outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The ad blasts Sen. Rand Paul for his 2020 stance on an antilynching bill. It doesn&#8217;t mention Paul co-sponsored a new version of that legislation.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zdsSpSp1zb\">https:\/\/t.co\/zdsSpSp1zb<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 USA TODAY Politics (@usatodayDC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/usatodayDC\/status\/1531969324893851650?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 1, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Paul\u2019s team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtvq.com\/charles-booker-talks-history-of-lynching-in-campaign-ad-wears-noose-around-neck\/\">responded<\/a> to the attack as well, saying in a statement, \u201cDr. Paul worked diligently to strengthen the language of this legislation and is a cosponsor of the bill that now ensures that federal law will define lynching as the absolutely heinous crime that it is. Any attempt to state otherwise is a desperate misrepresentation of the facts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Raphael Warnock (D-GA) also co-sponsored the bi-partisan legislation \u2013 and Sen. Booker released a statement at the time, saying, \u201cThe effort to pass anti-lynching legislation has spanned more than a century. After 200 failed attempts, Congress is now finally prepared to reckon with America\u2019s history of racialized violence. I am proud to announce Senators Paul and Warnock as cosponsors of the Emmett Till Antilynching Act.
